NOTING THE WEEK OF APRIL 14-20:
Carolina went 5-0 last week to extend its season-best winning streak to nine games. With three wins over Boston College, UNC swept its third ACC series of the season and has posted back-to-back sweeps for the first time since beating Duke and NC State in 2006. The Tar Heels can register their first 10-game winning streak since winning the first 10 games of the 2007 season with a win at Charlotte Tuesday.
At 34-7, Carolina has matched the 1983 squad for the best record through 41 games in school history. That team won its next six games before losing three of its last five to finish the season with a 42-10 record. This year's team shares the national lead with Florida State with 34 wins.
The Tar Heels had a very complete week on the field with a .335 batting average, a 1.69 ERA, a .985 fielding percentage and nine steals in 10 tries over the five games.
Saturday's 6-0 win over Boston College marked the Tar Heels' sixth shutout of the season. Carolina has posted at least seven shutouts in each of the last four seasons, including a school-record nine in 2006. UNC owns an NCAA-best 2.15 ERA, which would ranks as the Tar Heels' best mark since a 1.66 staff ERA in 1967.
Carolina's bullpen worked 18 1/3 innings on the week and allowed only two unearned runs for a 0.00 ERA. Eight different relievers combined to strikeout 21 batters and issue only four walks. Logan Munson, Colin Bates and Brian Moran each worked more than three innings and combined for 14 strikeouts. On the season, the UNC bullpen owns a 1.44 ERA, a 10-2 record and seven saves. Tar Heel relievers have fanned 219 batters in 175 1/3 innings.
Sophomore right fielder Tim Fedroff led No. 4 North Carolina to an unbeaten week by hitting .409 (9-22) with six runs, seven RBI, five extra-base hits, two home runs and three stolen bases. He opened the week by becoming the first Tar Heel in recent memory to hit for the cycle at UNC Greensboro. Fedroff was 4-for-4 with three runs, three RBI and two walks in the 14-3 win. The Flagtown, N.J., native also had a big game in the opener with Boston College, going 2-for-4 with three RBI on a double and a two-run home run. In Sunday's series finale, Fedroff drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with a fifth-inning single. Fedroff, who also stole three bases on the week, leads Carolina with a .398 average and nine home runs and is second on the team with 40 RBI and 10 steals.
Fedroff ranks third in the ACC in batting, second in hits (68) and total bases (113), fourth in runs (50) and ninth in RBI.
Freshman right-hander Matt Harvey won twice in a 5-0 week for the Tar Heels and allowed just one earned run over 6 1/3 innings. The Mystic, Conn., product struck out 10 of the 28 batters he faced on the week and allowed only six hits and three walks. Wednesday, he picked up the win in relief in the 12-inning victory over Charlotte by striking out two of the three batters he faced in the top of the 12th to set the stage for the Tar Heels' rally in the bottom of the inning. Sunday against Boston College, Harvey matched a career high with eight strikeouts and allowed just one earned run on six hits over 5 1/3 innings. Harvey improved to 6-2 with a 2.39 ERA in his rookie campaign with the two wins. He is second on the team with 46 strikeouts in just 37 2/3 innings.
Junior right-hander Adam Warren tossed seven shutout innings and allowed just three hits to pick up his sixth win of the season Saturday. He is now 19-0 as a Tar Heel and needs just one more win to match Scott Bankhead as the last UNC pitcher to win 20 straight decisions. Bankhead went 20-0 over the 1983 and '84 seasons.
Sophomore righty Alex White picked up his seventh win of the season Friday to surpass his win total as a freshman in 2007. White, who has won four straight starts, is 7-2 with a 1.99 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 49 2/3 innings.
Junior catcher Tim Federowicz got back on track with nine hits in 21 at-bats for a .429 average last week. He was joined by Seth Williams (.412) and Tim Fedroff (.409) with averages over .400 for the week. Williams led the team with a .500 average (5-10) in the Boston College series.
Sophomore second baseman Kyle Seager logged his third multi-home run game of the season Friday against Boston College and finished 2-for-2 with a career-best five RBI to push his ACC-best total to 57. Seager, who also belted three home runs at Clemson last weekend, had accounted for five of his eight homers over a three-game ACC stretch after Friday's effort. He finished the week with a team-high nine RBI.
Junior shortstop Garrett Gore hit .400 (4-10) with a team-high-tying five RBI in the Boston College series and batted .368 (7-19) with six RBI for the week. Gore now has 25 RBI on the season to give the Tar Heels six players with 25-plus RBI.
Senior left fielder Kyle Shelton drove in a career-high four runs and hit his second career home run at UNC Greensboro Tuesday to jump-start a productive week. He hit .308 (8-26) with eight RBI and five extra-base hits, including two triples.
