Six Tar Heels Selected In MLB Draft

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - North Carolina outfielder Tim Fedroff and catcher Tim Federowicz were selected with successive seventh-round picks to highlight six Tar Heels chosen on day two of the 2008 Major League Baseball Player Draft Friday.
After Fedroff was chosen by the Cleveland Indians and Federowicz was taken next by the Boston Red Sox with the very next pick, pitchers Rob Wooten (13th round, Milwaukee Brewers), Tyler Trice (21st round, Colorado Rockies) and Adam Warren (36th round, Cleveland Indians) and outfielder Seth Williams (40th round, New York Mets) were also selected.
Six Tar Heels were chosen for the second straight year, matching Carolina's most selections since 2000.
Fedroff, who is batting .402 with 12 home runs and 67 RBI, was chosen with the 231st overall pick by the Indians. He is a .376 career hitter with 17 homers and 108 RBI and was a second-team All-America and first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference pick this season.
Federowicz, who is hitting .304 with four homers and 39 RBI, was grabbed one pick later (232nd overall) by the Red Sox. He is a two-time All-ACC pick and sports a .320 career batting average with 20 home runs and 166 RBI in 201 games.
Wooten, who is 6-2 with four saves and a 1.93 ERA as the Tar Heels' top relief pitcher this season, went in the 13th round (398th overall) to the Brewers. Wooten has pitched in 103 career games and is 12-3 with a 2.77 ERA in 126 2/3 innings.
Fellow reliever Trice, who owns s 2.20 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings, followed eight rounds later in the 21st round (647th overall) to the Rockies. Trice has pitched in 61 career games and owns a 4.18 ERA.
Warren, who is 8-1 this season as the Tar Heels' Saturday starter and is 21-1 in his career, joined Fedroff as an Indians' draft choice in the 36th round selection (1,101st overall). Warren ranks as the ACC and UNC leader in career winning percentage (.955) and sports a 3.52 ERA in 166 1/3 innings.
Williams, who is batting .309 with seven home runs, 21 doubles and 38 RBI, was picked by the Mets in the 40th round (1,214th overall). He is a .296 career hitter with 32 homers, 51 doubles and 137 RBI. Williams ranks among UNC's career leaders in doubles and extra-base hits.
After four North Carolina signees were selected Thursday, four more were chosen Friday on day two. Eight of the 10 prep standouts that signed National Letters of Intent with Carolina last fall were drafted.
Right-handed pitcher Quentin Miller (Medford, N.J.) opened Friday's signee selections in the 20th round (594th overall) to Pittsburgh Pirates.
A pair of North Carolina products followed, as shortstop Garrison Lassiter (Clemmons, N.C.) went in the 27th round (830th overall) to the New York Yankees, and right-hander Jimmy Messer (Hudson, N.C.) was taken in the 44th round (1,324th overall) by the Oakland Athletics.
Shortstop Matt Harrison (Henderson, Nev.) was selected in the 46th round (1,385th overall) by the Atlanta Braves.
