WILMINGTON, N.C. --- The North Carolina women's tennis team opened its fall season this weekend at the UNC Wilmington Collegiate Tennis Invitational at the Country Club of Landfall's Drysdale Tennis Center. Two Tar Heels were in action as freshman Jocelyn Ffriend made her collegiate debut and senior Hanes Harris joined her for doubles play.
Ffriend won her first college match on Friday, topping Elon's Elisa Simonetti, 4-6, 6-3, (12-10), in the first round of the top singles flight. The New Rochelle, N.Y., product then fell to UNCW's Kayla Schwenk, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 9-7, in the semifinals.
Ffriend and Harris won their opening round doubles match, 8-6, over Lucy Dougherty and Sarah Templeton of UNC Greensboro. The Carolina duo then defaulted its semifinal match to eventual champions Neils Barringer and Diana Mortlock from NC State.
Next up for the Tar Heels is the Furman Fall Classic, Sept. 26-28.
