Dallas Mavericks All-Star and former University of North Carolina All-America Jerry Stackhouse will present a check from his Triple Threat Foundation for $50,000 to the Lenoir Memorial Foundation to benefit the Diabetes Program at the Minges Wellness Center in the Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston, N.C. The presentation will occur Thursday afternoon at the hospital.
The donation will create an endowment that will provide three nursing scholarships (in honor of his two sisters who passed away from diabetes-related complications). The diabetes program will be renamed after his mother, Minnie Stackhouse, who also suffers from diabetes.
Stackhouse founded the Triple Threat Foundation in 2002 to increase funding for diabetes-related research, patient care and prevention; promote the importance of daily physical activity and maintain a proper diet; and encourage behavioral changes that lesson the risk of diabetes and other serious medical conditions caused by obesity.
Having recently completed his 13th season out of Carolina, Jerry Stackhouse has been a member of the Dallas Mavericks for the past four seasons. A two-time NBA All-Star (2000, 2001), Stackhouse has averaged at least 20 points per game in five of his 13 professional seasons. He is one of only two players to have been awarded the NBA's Community Assist Award on two different occasions for his community service efforts. He is also a two-time honoree by The Sporting News as one of the "Good Guys" in sports. Stackhouse is also a fixture at Dallas Mavericks community events.
The Lenoir Memorial Foundation supports the mission of Lenoir Memorial Hospital to ensure exceptional Healthcare for the people with the service area. The Foundation, a non-profit organization, operates exclusively to receive contributions, hold and manage assets, make contributions to improve the health status of its community and assist in providing high quality health care and outstanding customer service. All of the funds raised are returned to the community by way of health initiatives and programs that focus on improving the health and well-being for the citizens of Lenoir, Jones and Greene counties.
