CHAPEL HILL --- North Carolina senior forward Brian Shriver went for four goals and junior striker Eddie Ababio notched a brace as the No. 15 Tar Heels (7-1-1) routed East Tennessee State, 8-0, on a rainy Saturday night at Fetzer Field. Freshmen Billy Schuler and Alex Dixon also scored for UNC, which posted its biggest victory since an 11-0 win over Rider in 2000.
After a back-and-forth opening five minutes, sophomore Cameron Brown fed Shriver into the middle of the box, and the Clearwater, Fla., product finished from 12 yards to make it 1-0 at 6:07. One became two at 14:38 as Shriver headed home a Schuler cross inside the six-yard box.
An impressive individual effort made it 3-nil just 16 seconds later, as Schuler collected a loose ball near midfield and beat a number of ETSU (4-3-0) defenders and, ultimately, Buccaneer goalie James Holt.
Play settled down for the remainder of the first half, but the Tar Heel onslaught picked up in earnest in the 57th minute. Shriver completed his hat trick off an Ababio cross to make it 4-0 at 56:09 and Ababio bagged his first of the night from a give-and-go with Garry Lewis at 56:52.
Ababio got his second and team-high seventh of the year less than two minutes later with a clinical finish from the edge of the penalty area at 58:43. That team lead would not make it beyond the 60th minute, however, as Shriver's fourth of the night and seventh of the season came at 59:32. Shriver chested down a long cross from Schuler and deposited the ball in the far corner for a 7-0 lead.
Both sides made wholesale changes at that point, including Jarrett Davis replacing Jacob Wescoe in goal for the Tar Heels. Davis made the lone save of the night for Carolina moments later, stopping David Haba's close-range effort.
Dixon would finish the scoring in the 84th minute, volleying home a loose ball from 25 yards out at 83:30.
Shriver's four goals were the most for a Tar Heel since Ryan Kneipper scored five in an NCAA Tournament win over Winthrop in 2002. UNC last scored eight goals in a game in 2001, an 8-1 win over East Carolina in the season opener.
Next up for Carolina is a home meeting with UNC Asheville on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.
