Sexton And Goddard Named Progress Energy Performers Of The Week

CHAPEL HILL - Quarterback Cameron Sexton tossed two touchdown passes including the winner with 46 seconds left and safety Trimane Goddard had two fourth quarter interceptions including the game-clincher in the end zone on the final play of the game to lead UNC to a 28-24 win at Miami. Setxon and Goddard are co-winners of the Progress Energy Tar Heel Performer of the Week award for September 22-28, 2008.
Goddard, a senior from Robersonville, N.C., also posted a team-high eight tackles and broke up another in Carolina's come-from-behind victory. On the final play of the game, Goddard picked off a pass in the back of the end zone, knocking it out of the hands of the intended receiver and holding on for his second interception of the day as the clock hit zero. Earlier, he returned an interception 35 yards. It was the second time in his career Goddard had two interceptions in a game at Miami (2005).
Sexton, a junior from Laurinburg, N.C., came off the bench to complete 11 of 19 passes for 242 yards. Sexton came in on Carolina's third possession of the game and led the Tar Heels on a 58-yard scoring drive. In the second half, with Carolina trailing by 10, he hit Hakeem Nicks in stride for a 74-yard touchdown play. It was the longest pass of his career. Finally, with time winding down and Carolina trailing by three, he led the Tar Heels on a 56-yard scoring drive, going 3 for 4, including a perfectly thrown pass in the corner of the end zone to Brooks Foster for the game-winning touchdown.

Junior Danielle Forword scored the gamewinner in both of UNC's wins last week. On Saturday at Duke in Carolina's ACC opener. her goal on a penalty corner put UNC ahead of the ninth-ranked Blue Devils 2-1 with eight minutes remaining in regulation, and the Tar Heels hung on to make that the final score. On Sunday at Longwood, neither team scored for the first 20 minutes of play before Forword provided two goals within 42 seconds and UNC went on to win 3-1. She has a team-high 15 goals this season, four more than she had in all of last year.

Senior setter Stephanie Jansma led the Tar Heels to a pair of sweeps to open the Atlantic Coast Conference as Carolina claimed wins over Maryland, 3-0, on Friday before taking down Boston College, 3-0, on Saturday. Jansma posted back-to-back matches with 28 assists in each outing and nearly picking up a double-double in each match. The Lancaster, N.Y. native picked up eight kills on the week with zero errors in 11 total chances for a .727 hitting percentage. Jansma recorded nine digs in the win over Maryland and added four more for 13 against Boston College to cap off the weekend.

It took freshman forward Courtney Jones only 40 minutes of playing time Sunday to record her first career hat trick in a North Carolina uniform, leading the Tar Heels to a 5-0 victory over Maryland. Jones had goals at 4:56 and 8:43 of the game and then finished off her three-goal afternoon with a tally at 59:13. Jones started but played only 40 minutes as Tar Heel head coach Anson Dorrance made liberal use of his bench as he played 11 different Tar Heel forwards in the game.

UNC junior midfielder Tobin Heath recorded the first hat trick of her career as North Carolina defeated Clemson 5-2 last Thursday at Clemson, S.C. Heath scored all three goals in the first half of the game as the natural hat trick was recorded in a span of 25:52 and it rallied the Tar Heels from an early 1-0 deficit against the Tigers. The hat trick was the first for a Carolina player since Casey Nogueira had one against Ohio State on September 20, 2007. Heath also had an assist in UNC's 5-0 victory over Maryland on Sunday, a game in which a different Tar Heel, Courtney Jones, had her own hat trick.

Senior forward Brian Shriver scored five goals last week to lead the No. 15 Tar Heels to non-conference wins over Elon and East Tennessee State. After scoring the first goal of the 2-1 win over the Phoenix Tuesday, the Clearwater, Fla., product netted the most goals by a Tar Heel since 2002 with four scores in the 8-0 victory over the Buccaneers. Shriver scored Carolina's first two goals against ETSU, finding the back of the net in the seventh and 15th minutes. After intermission, he scored twice in a four-minute span - in the 57th and 60th minutes - to stake the Tar Heels to a seven-goal cushion. With the five-goal week, Shriver, who scored eight goals over his first thee years at UNC, grabbed share of the team lead with seven goals on the season.
