LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- The North Carolina duo of junior Katrina Tsang and freshman Shinann Featherston advanced to the quarterfinals of the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Tsang and Featherston, ranked No. 12 in the ITA preseason poll and seeded fourth in the event, topped Jessica Nguyen and Logan Hansen of Stanford, 8-5. The UNC tandem will face Sarah Fansler and Lindsay Kinstler of USC on Saturday.
In singles action, all three Tar Heels were eliminated from main draw play. Tsang was defeated in three sets by the top-seeded Kelcy McKenna of Arizona State, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, after advancing to the second round by default. Featherston fell to No. 38 Fansler, 6-1, 6-4, while Jelena Durisic lost to second-seeded Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech, 6-1, 6-1.
Both Featherston and Durisic were victorious in consolation matches, however. Featherston won the first set from UNLV's Nikol Dimitrova, 6-0, before Dimitrova retired. Durisic topped Stanford's Courtney Clayton, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
