Ellington Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Wayne Ellington had a season-high 25 points, a career-high seven assists and six rebounds in UNC's win over #10 Clemson and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for January 19-25, 2009. Ellington also was UNC's defensive player of the game as the Tar Heels held the Tigers to 35 percent shooting from the floor and 70 points. It was the first time Ellington had scored 20 plus points in consecutive games as the Tar Heels rang up season-highs in points and field goal percentage against the Tigers.

Senior Vincent Ramirez led North Carolina to an unbeaten week on the mat with individual victories at 141 pounds in duals against Duke, Virginia and Navy to run his season record to 25-6. The Durham native picked up his biggest win of the week with a 9-3 decision against No. 19 Nick Nelson to highlight the Tar Heels' 23-9 victory over Virginia. Currently ranked No. 18, Ramirez opened with a 12-4 major decision over Spencer Jasper in the 25-10 win at Duke and ended his week with a 9-3 decision over Matt Pagan in the 25-9 win over Navy.

Sophomore Eric Hsieh put together several outstanding individual performances in leading the UNC men's epee squad to a strong weekend of competition. On Saturday in Baltimore, Md., Hsieh went 2-1 against Drew, 1-1 against Lafayette and 1-0 against Hunter as the Tar Heels were undefeated. On Sunday at Princeton, Hsieh was 3-0 against Haverford and 2-1 against Princeton as UNC went 1-1.

Junior, St. Petersburg, Fla.
Junior Jennifer Sawicki had a particularly strong day of competition Sunday as the Tar Heels took on Cornell, Haverford and Princeton at the Princeton Dual Meets in Princeton, N.J. Sawicki went 3-0 against Cornell to open the day then was 2-0 against Haverford and 2-1 against Princeton as the Tar Heels finished 1-2.

Donato went 3-0 in both singles and doubles last week as UNC completed play in the Duke Indoor Invitational and then defeated Charlotte and JMU in dual matches. He upset 25th-ranked Reid Carleton of Duke 6-1, 6-0 in the Duke Invite and combined with Taylor Fogleman to win 8-3 in doubles over the No. 38 team of Kiril Dimitrov and Alain Michel of the Blue Devils. Playing No. 1 singles and doubles, he lost only six games in dispatching the top singles players from Charlotte and James Madison and with Fogleman did not drop a single game in winning two doubles matches.
