No. 5 Tar Heels Wrap Up Exhibition Slate With Big Win

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Freshman Krista Gross led all scorers with 16 points and sophomore Laura Broomfield had a double-double as No. 5 North Carolina closed out its exhibition schedule with a 121-52 win over Division II Carson-Newman Tuesday at the Dean E. Smith Center. The Tar Heels shot 53.6 percent from the field for the game, forced 34 turnovers and outrebounded the Eagles, 66-33, en route to the victory.
Broomfield, who finished with 14 points and 11 boards in just 15 minutes, sparked a 14-0 run with a rebound and bucket that turned a two-point game into a 26-10 advantage for the Tar Heels after just seven minutes.
Carolina would push the lead to 34 by the break, with Broomfield and Gross each chipping in 12 before the half.
UNC put the game out of reach right of the locker room with a 22-1 run capped by a pair of threes from sophomore She'la White and an Italee Lucas basket.
All 13 healthy Tar Heels scored, with Gross leading six UNC players in double figures. Lucas came off the bench to score 15 on 7-of-10 shooting, while Cetera DeGraffenreid (15), White (12) and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt (10) also reached double digits.
Lucas led the team with six of Carolina's 35 assists, while Ruffin-Pratt added a team-high five steals to go with four rebounds and four assists.
Mandy Mendenhall led Carson-Newman with 11 points.
Carolina opens the 2009-10 regular season on Friday when the Tar Heels welcome the College of Charleston to Chapel Hill. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in the Smith Center.
