Barth Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

CHAPEL HILL - Casey Barth booted a 21-yard game-winning field goal as time expired to defeat No. 14 Virginia Tech and earn Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week honors for October 26-November 1, 2009. Earlier in the fourth quarter, Barth had kicked a 19-yard field goal to tie the game at 17 with 2:52 remaining. The game-winning kick came nearly five years to the day of his brother Connor's game-winning field goal as time expired to beat No. 4 Miami on Oct. 30, 2004. Casey Barth's winning kick gave Carolina its first road win over a top 15 team since 2001 and it was the first UNC win in the state of Virginia since 1981.

Sophomore forward Alex Dixon recorded North Carolina?s first hat trick since 2005 in the No. 3 Tar Heels? 7-0 win over Stetson Wednesday. Dixon needed fewer than seven minutes to score successive goals in the 40th, 45th and 47th minutes for Carolina?a first three-goal effort since Scott Campbell against Boston College in 2005. Dixon?s three goals give him five on the season to grab a share of the team lead.

Senior Branagan Fuller posted 32 kills, 15 digs and a block in two matches this weekend for the Tar Heels. Fuller has led Carolina in kills for the last four matches, sporting 88 kills in her last six games. The Murietta, Calif. native registered a new Carolina career high with 18 kills in a 3-1 loss to Georgia Tech Friday night. The senior transfer, who posted over 1200 kills in three seasons at UNC Greensboro, posted a career best 32 kills as a Spartan. Fuller added another strong performance with a double-double against Clemson registering 14 kills and 10 digs in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss. Fuller is averaging 3.30 kills per set over her last six matches as Carolina returns to action Tuesday against N.C. State.

Junior defender Rachel Givan played all 180 minutes on defense as UNC closed the season with shutout wins over Clemson and No. 8 Maryland, allowing the Tar Heels to finish in sole possession of third place in the ACC standings. Givan entered the week with no points on the season but she assisted on UNC's third goal against Clemson and she had the game-winning assist against Maryland. The Heels' defense did not allow Clemson and shot and limited No. 8 Maryland to nine shots in its home finale, only four on goal. Givan leads the Tar Heels this year in minutes played with 1,627.

Tyler Harris had two event wins, a second and a third as the Tar Heels competed in the NCAC Tar Heel Invitational and defeated Georgia Tech 166.5-119.5. Harris won the 400 IM in the THI and the 200 IM against Georgia Tech. He was second in the 200 back versus the Yellow Jackets and he was third in the 1650 free in the THI. Harris has the top times in the ACC this year in the 200 IM and 400 IM, is third in the ACC in the 1650 free, seventh in the 1000 free and 11th in the 200 back.

Moriarty had two wins and a second place in back to back meets in the Tar Heel Invitational and a 165-128 win over Georgia Tech. Moriarty won the 400 IM in the THI at 4:22.41 and against the Yellow Jackets she was first in the 200 IM at 2:05.24 and second in the 100 fly in 56.55. So far this year Moriarty is ranked No. 1 in the ACC in the 400 IM by nearly four seconds and she is third on the 200 IM top times list and ninth in the 100 fly.

Charlotte Verstraten came off the bench to score the game winning goal as UNC wrapped up the regular season Saturday with a 2-0 win at Old Dominion. The Tar Heels improved to 16-1 on the season with their 12th shout. Verstraten's gamewinner came in the 13th minute of play and was her third goal of the season. She also had a hand in setting up Carolina's second goal, scored by Elizabeth Stephens in the 50th minute of play.
