The 28-27 loss to NC State was the closest margin of victory in the series since NC State won, 35-34, in Chapel Hill in 1986. It's the first one-point game played in Raleigh since the Pack won, 21-20, in 1975.
Carolina finished with a season-high 481 yards, the most since it had 486 yards against Duke on Nov. 20, 2004.
Carolina compiled a season-high 395 yards in the first three quarters and went over the 400-yard mark for the first time in 2009. Previous high was 375 vs. The Citadel in the season opener.
In the first half, Carolina posted its longest touchdown pass (70 yards from Yates to Boyd) and longest touchdown run (40 yards by Johnny White) of the season. It was the second-longest run of the year (44 yards by Shaun Draughn at Virginia Tech). Entering the NC State game, the previous long pass was a 59-yarder from Yates to Jheranie Boyd vs. East Carolina.
Each of Carolina three first-half touchdowns came on scoring drives of less than 50 seconds. They included a three-play, 53-yard drive in 45 seconds, a two-play, 60-yard drive in 44 seconds and a two-play, 75-yard drive in 49 seconds.
Tailback/wide receiver Johnny White scored on a 40-yard run in the second quarter to give Carolina a 17-7 lead. It was his first career rushing touchdown and longest career run from scrimmage. His previous long rush was a 22-yarder this year vs. Florida State. White finished the game with 82 yards, a season high.
Prior to Johnny White's 40-yard touchdown run, the longest touchdown run of the season by the Tar Heels was a 16-yard scoring run by Shaun Draughn vs. Georgia Southern.
Freshman wide receiver Jheranie Boyd scored two touchdowns in the first half and now has four receiving scores this year and five overall. He caught a 35-yarder and a 70-yarder in the first half.
Boyd had his first career 100-yard receiving game. He had two catches for 105 yards, both in the first half. It was Carolina's third 100-yard receiving game this season. The first two were by freshman Erik Highsmith (vs. ECU and Georgia Tech). Greg Little added the fourth later in today's game.
Greg Little had his first 100-yard receiving game as a Tar Heel as he finished with six catches for 159 yards. That is the most receiving yards by a Tar Heel this season. Little set a career-high with 76 yards receiving in the first half alone, including a career-long 62-yard catch. His previous long was a 34-yarder vs. ECU this year and his previous high in a game was 69 last week at Boston College.
Boyd and Little became the first pair of Tar Heels to have 100 receiving yards in a game since Brooks Foster (139) and Hakeem Nicks (113) did it against Virginia in 2007.
T.J. Yates completed 13 of 19 passes for a season-high 280 yards. That is his highest passing yardage figure since he threw for 283 yards at Georgia Tech on Nov. 17, 2007. The 280 yards are the fifth-most Yates has thrown for in a game.
This was the fourth time in 2009 and the 11th time in his career that Yates threw for two touchdowns in a game.
Yates' first half touchdown passes of 35 and 70 yards were the 18th and 19th touchdown passes of his career for 25 or more yards. The 70-yarder was his eighth scoring pass of 50 or more yards.
Yates moved ahead of Chris Keldorf into second place all-time at UNC with 37 touchdown passes.
Yates completed six passes for 206 yards in the first half, an average of 34.3 yards per completion. He finished the game averaging 21.5 yards per completion.
Defensive tackle Marvin Austin matched his previous season total for sacks in the first half with two.
In the first half, Carolina outgained the Wolfpack in total offense, 313-111, including a 146-15 advantage in the first quarter.
Sophomore defensive end Robert Quinn forced his sixth fumble of the season in the first half.
The 56-yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson to Owen Spencer was the second-longest pass against the UNC defense this season. It was the second of 40 yards or more.
Tailback Ryan Houston had a 42-yard pass completion to Greg Little in the third quarter. Houston is the seventh different Tar Heel to attempt a pass this year and the sixth to complete a pass.
Sophomore place-kicker Casey Barth booted his 15th and 16th consecutive field goals, converting from 31 and 20 yards out.
Barth's field goal streak was snapped when his 38-yard attempt in the fourth quarter was blocked. It was the first field goal attempt he has had blocked in college and it came on his 39th career attempt.
The blocked field goal was the first by the opponents since 2005 when Virginia Tech's Darryl Tapp blocked a Connor Barth attempt.
Carolina's 122 yards in penalties was a season high (previous 120 against Duke).
This was the first game UNC's defense did not force a turnover since the loss to Virginia on October 3rd.
