Raleigh, N.C. ------ Junior Kara Wright finished second in the all-around competition to help lead the North Carolina gymnastics team to a third place finish at the East Atlantic Gymnastics League championships Saturday evening. NC State won the meet with a 195.700, narrowly edging West Virginia's score of 195.500.
"We started off great and were in first place through the first three events," said head coach Derek Galvin. "We had to count a fall and an out of bounds on floor and that was the difference. Floor has been inconsistent for us this year and unfortunately that showed itself tonight. I'm proud of way the ladies competed."
Wright had a 39.175 in the all-around, scoring a 9.825 on vault, 9.825 on uneven bars, 9.725 on balance beam and 9.800 on floor exercise. It was her second-highest all-around score of the season and according to Galvin, it was her "best meet of the season."
On the vault, Wright was one of three Tar Heels to register a 9.825 to tie for 10th. She was joined by freshmen Morgan Evans and Zoya Johnson. Carolina had a team score of 49.050.
On uneven bars, Wright finished tied for fifth, just .025 out of first place. Rachel Schneider, Christine Nguyen and Evan all had 9.775s as Carolina posted a 48.900.
On the balance beam, Tina Jacob scored a 9.850 to place fourth, while freshman Krista Jasper and Johnson had 9.800. Nguyen, the EAGL Gymnast of the Year, had a 9.775. The Tar Heels had a 48.950.
Jasper scored a 9.825 to place second and lead the Tar Heels on the floor exercise. Unfortunately, the Tar Heels were forced to count a fall and had a team score of 47.925.
"I'm proud of way they girls competed tonight," said Galvin. "It looks like we will get a bid for the NCAA regionals, but we'll know for sure on Monday. I'm pleased that it appears we'll have another opportunity to compete."
