Wayne Ellington Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Wayne Ellington scored 19 points, 17 in the first half, to lead UNC past Michigan State for the national championship and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for April 6-12, 2009.
The Wynnewood, Pa., junior made all three of his three-point attempts and finished the Final Four with 39 points in two games. He set a Final Four record by making 80 percent from behind the arc (8 for 10).

Right-hander Patrick Johnson made two starts on the week and allowed just one run over 11 innings, while striking out 17. On Tuesday, Johnson was masterful in carrying a no-hitter into the seventh against No. 14 ECU, which entered the night eighth nationally with a .361 team average. Over a career-best 6 1/3 innings, the Conover, N.C., native struck out a career-high 11, walked three and allowed just one base hit in the seventh. He retired six of the final seven batters he faced via the strikeout and fanned two or more in four separate frames. In his first career ACC start Sunday in Tallahassee, Johnson held FSU to just one run on six hits and two walks and struck out six over 4 2/3 in a predetermined staff outing. He posted a 0.82 ERA for the week and lowered his season mark to an ACC-best 2.15 over 37 2/3 innings. Johnson is second on the team and ninth in the ACC with 50 strikeouts and owns a .205 opponent average to rank third in the league. As a starter, Johnson is 2-0 with a 0.43 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 21 innings. He has allowed only one earned run and nine hits in four starts.

Russell, a junior midfielder from Andover, Mass., tallied two goals and one assist in a losing effort in Carolina's 13-8 loss at No. 2 Maryland on Saturday. Russell also added two ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover in a strong all-around performance in a game matching two top-five nationally ranked squads. The defeat ended UNC's eight-game winning streak. Carolina will close out its 2009 ACC season with a road date at Duke on Friday night.

Junior Sanaz Marand was a perfect 2-0 in both singles and doubles against some of the top competition in the nation as she defeated both the No. 1 Ani Mijacika of Clemson and No. 7-ranked Irina Falconi of Georgia Tech at No. 1 singles.
Marand topped Falconi 6-1, 6-1 after teaming with Sophie Grabinski to beat No. 31 Christy Striplin and Noelle Hickey in doubles. The Katy, Texas, native followed a day later with a pair of top-10 wins against Clemson. Marand teamed with Grabinski to top No. 8 Mijacika and Keri Wong in doubles before knocking off Mijacika 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Marand improved to 9-2 in ACC singles play and has won seven straight overall.
