Tar Heels Set To Meet Wolfpack In ACC Opening Round

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina softball team will return to action Friday, May 8 when the Tar Heels head to Raleigh for the ACC Tournament where Carolina will meet rival NC State at 12 noon in the first game of the tournament. The Tar Heels (44-10) earned the third seed with a 15-5 conference mark, while the Wolfpack (23-24) finished the season at 5-13 in conference play earning the sixth seed. The Tar Heels are 8-12 against the Wolfpack since NC State started a fast-pitch program for the 2004 season. Carolina captured all three games against NC State this season with a pair of 4-0 wins on April 4 in a doubleheader at NC State's Dail Stadium before taking Sunday's finale, 2-1.
The rivals have met four previous times in the ACC Tournament, including in 2008 when the Wolfpack ended Carolina's run scoring a 1-0 win in the rain-shortened tournament.
Georgia Tech (40-13) earned the tournament's top seed with a 17-3 conference mark and will take on Virginia (25-21) who finished 2-15. The winner of the Carolina-NC State matchup will face the winner of second-seeded Florida State (41-13, 17-4 ACC) versus seventh-seeded Boston College (18-32, 3-15 ACC). The other quarterfinal matchup will feature fourth-seeded Maryland (29-25, 9-11 ACC) and the fifth-seed Virginia Tech (27-27, 8-10 ACC).
