Christine Nguyen Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Christine Nguyen led the UNC gymnastics team to its eighth straight GW/Lindsey Ferris Invitational title and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for Jan. 11-17, 2010. In the six-team field, Nguyen, a senior from Plano, Texas, won the all-around with a 38.900 score and took the individual title on balance beam (9.800) and floor exercise (9.850). She also placed second on uneven bars (9.675).

Senior Dennis Drury entered the week ranked No. 12 in the 197-pound weight class and recorded two convincing wins in the week. On Tuesday night, Drury pinned John Barone of Duke in just 2:26 to help the Tar Heels defeat the Blue Devils. In Saturday's loss to No. 15 Virginia Tech, Drury recorded technical fall victory by beating Chris Penny 17-2. Drury now stands 18-6 on the season and has registered a team-high six pins.
