CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Katherine Perry, who will be a freshman on the University of North Carolina women's golf team next fall, captured the championship of the Carolinas/Georgia Junior Championship earlier this week (Jan. 17-18) at Mt. Vintage Plantation in North Augusta, S.C, a par 72 layout.
After carding a 76 in the first round, Perry fired a two-under 70, a tournament record, in the next day's final round. Perry, from Cary, N.C., trailed Carrie Metz, from Buford, Ga., by two strokes with nine holes left to play when on her 10th hole (hole #1), Perry tied it up as she scored a par while Metz had a double bogey. Metz took the lead back on the next hole with a birdie, but Perry grabbed the lead for good on their 12th hole (hole #3) as she birdied and Metz bogied. Perry then birdied two more holes (#6 and #8) while Metz bogied #5. Perry's two-over-par 146 total beat Metz's four-over 150 by two strokes.
Perry, a four-year letterwinner at Athens Drive High School, won the 2009 N.C. 4A State Championship and was selected the conference player of the year in 2007 and 2009.
Another incoming Tar Heel, Jackie Chang, finished in sixth place at the Harder Hall Invitational with a four-over-par 292 total after firing rounds of 76-66-73-77. Jordan Allyne, a junior for the Tar Heels, tied for 31st place with a 314 total. The 72-hole event was played Jan. 6-9 at Harder Hall Golf Course in Sebring, Fla., which features a par 72, 6,151-yard layout.
