The University of North Carolina men's golf team fired a 3-over-par 291 in the third and final round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges for a 12-over-par 876 total good for seventh place overall. Junior Jack Fields led the Tar Heels by firing a 2-under 70 and finished in a tie for eighth place in the individual race.
Fields' 2-under 70 leaves him with a 4-under 212 total for the tournament. The Southern Pines, N.C., native notched two birdies (holes 5 and 14) sandwiched between two bogies (holes 2 and 17), yet really made up ground courtesy of an eagle on the par-5 8th hole. Two sophomores, Michael McGowan and Clark Palmer, finished next in line for the Tar Heels, placing T-27th and T-35th, respectively. McGowan shot a 1-over-par 73 and totaled 220 for the tournament while Palmer, after notching three front nine birdies, posted three double bogeys to fire a 4-over-par 76 good for 223 for the three-day event. Henry Zaytoun III, a senior from Raleigh, N.C., carded a 1-over 73 on Sunday for a 224 total and is tied for 42nd, while junior Matt Raudenbush, from Pine Valley, N.J., fired a 3-over 75 and stands at 227 in a tie for 53rd place.
ACC rival Virginia made a 10-under final round charge to take the 14-team tournament championship with a final total of 11-under par. Kent State, the only other team under par for the tournament, fired a 2-under 286 in the final round that was good for the runner-up title. Third place goes to Chattanooga with a 6-under 282 that secured an Even-par finish, while Wake Forest placed next in line with a 3-under par 867 for the tournament. Following Wake came Michigan and Tennessee in a tie for fifth overall with a 873 total, with Michigan notching the second lowest team score of the day with an 8-under-par performance.
Jace Long of Missouri and Mackenzie Hughes of Kent State began the day tied for the individual lead at 6-under, yet a 7-under 65 stroke effort in the final round sealed the tourney victory for Hughes. Long, meanwhile, shot a 1-over 73 and finished in a tie for fourth. Joey Garber of Michigan and Ben Rusch of Virginia finished in a second place draw with 6-under par 210 stroke performances for the tournament. In addition to Long, Kent State's John Hahn, Chattanooga's Stephan Jaeger, and Tennessee's Darren Renwick rounded out the contingent tied for fourth with a 5-under 211.
The Tar Heels will be back in action on October 23rd at the UNC-Greensboro Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C.
