CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore left-hander R.C. Orlan helped push the Fall World Series to a decisive game seven Sunday afternoon when he threw three and a third innings of one-run ball as the Fightin' Goitz claimed a 7-6 win over Neck Chedda to take the second series of the FWS. The teams will return to action on Monday at 2 p.m. to decide the winner of the Fall World Series after Team Neck Chedda claimed the first three-game series earlier in the week.
The Fightin' Goitz struck early and often Sunday afternoon as they pushed four runs across in the opening three innings. Parks Jordan picked up the RBI in the top of the first when he delivered a sacrifice fly to center field after back-to-back walks to Chaz Frank and Tommy Coyle.
Brian Goodwin pushed the lead to 3-0 in the top of the second with his two-run single back up the box following singles by Jeff Bouton and Tommy Coyle. Chedda starter Shane Taylor allowed a one-out single in the third to Tarron Robinson and allowed Robinson to come around and score after three separate wild pitches.
Neck Chedda was not going to go quietly, however, as they broke up Bryant Gaines' no-hit bid in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of singles but were unable to get on the board.
Gaines found himself in trouble in the fifth when he issued three consecutive walks to Ben Bunting, Brian Holberton and Jacob Stallings loading the bases with nobody out. The hottest hitter in the Fall World Series delivered a big blow for Chedda when Thomas Zengel drove a pitch into the right-center gap scoring all three runners and cutting the deficit to just one at 4-3. A wild pitch moved Zengel to third before Colin Moran grounded out to tie the game at 4-4.
A crucial dropped fly ball in the sixth gave the Chedda a chance at taking the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Holberton's shot to left was dropped on a running attempt by the left fielder, moving Holberton all the way to third base with one out. Jacob Stallings did his job and lifted a ball to center field that scored Holberton from third and put Neck Chedda nine outs from winning the Fall World Series.
The Fightin' Goitz' bats kept hitting in the top of the seventh when Jeff Bouton led off with a single through the left side before Chaz Frank dropped down a sacrifice bunt moving Bouton to second. Goodwin came through once again with a single to right field that scored Bouton with ease knotting things up at 5-5.
outon was the man of the hour once again in the top half of the eighth when he laced a pitch into the right-center gap for a one-out triple. Frank hit a slow roller to first that Ben Bunting grabbed and forced Bouton back to third for the second out. Tommy Coyle picked up his fourth RBI of the fall with a single through the right side putting the Goitz in front 6-5.
Team Neck Chedda left a pair on in the bottom of the eighth before the Goitz added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a bases loaded walk.
Chedda's first two batters would go down leaving everything up to Jacob Stallings. The junior cut the defecit to just one when he blasted a pitch down the left field line easily clearing the wall for his third home run in six games. The insurance run would prove costly as R.C. Orlan was able to get Zengel for the final out forcing a decisive game seven on Monday.
