North Carolina Coach Butch Davis
Opening Statement:
“Not a great deal to say. Talking with the team in the locker room, obviously we didn't play well enough to win the football game. When you have opportunities against a good football team you need to capitalize on them. You can't drive the length of the field, have really good drives, and settle for three. The interception in the endzone, that can completely change some of the momentum. We missed a real good chance to score an additional 17 points at that particular time. But having said all of that, you still have to play well and you can't turn the ball over. I think our kids will bounce back. We'll work as hard as we can to put this behind us and get ready for the next game. “
On team goals from this point on:
“We are going to get prepared to play next week the very best we can, and we're not even worried about the second of those two games. That has kind of been our philosophy all season long. “
On Anthony Elzy not playing early in the third quarter:
“He got a little bit gassed. We would like to play at times three running backs if we can. Obviously some of that luxury is gone with Ryan Houston not being available and Shaun Draughn missed the entire week of practice.”
UNC Player Quotes
Quan Sturdivant
On overall performance:
“We just didn't play good enough. Not as a team, not as a defense, offense, special teams; we just didn't play good enough. We came out a little bit flat and we got beat.”
On making second half adjustments:
“Yeah, we made adjustments, they paid off a little bit. I think the first time we came out and we got a stop. But like I said, we just didn't play the whole four quarters good.”
On Tyrod Taylor:
“On film he does a lot more running, but tonight he didn't run as much. So that was good on our part. But he still threw the ball and beat us. He's a great player; he's been playing for four years. You've got to give him his credit, he's a good player.”
Da'Norris Searcy
On the fumbled punt return:
“The ball hit the ground and I was trying to scoop it. But I slipped and the ball went right by me.”
On what the Tar Heels need to do to prepare for NC State next week:
“We've just got to stay focused and still prepare like it's any other game. We know it's going to be a tough team to play. And it being my last game here at Kenan Stadium, I'd like to go out of here with a win.”
Anthony Elzy
On learning from mistakes against VT:
“We made way too many mistakes this week and gave way too many opportunities to Virginia Tech. And that's something to clean up going into next week.”
On having any regrets about not having many opportunities to play running back before tonight:
“Not at all. I'm just playing my role. It's not about me trying to get as many carries at tailback as I can, it's [about] trying to fill a void that's there. And be there when they need you to be there.
Virginia Tech Coach Frank Beamer
Opening Statement:
“A great win for Virginia Tech. We beat a really good football team, I think, a really good football team. I appreciate how hard we battled, how we hung in there and played every play. A couple of balls bounced our way during the second half and Jevon (Gouveia-Winslow) did a great job of knocking that ball out near the goal line. Just guys flying to the ball and trying to make something happen. Overall, I thought it was great. I'm just proud of our football team, I'm proud of how hard we play and how consistent we play and we keep battling. I think the team's getting closer and closer and believing in each other and trusting each other. It's been a good ride. I really appreciate these guys.”
On what it's like to be undefeated in league play:
“Tyrod (Taylor) gives you a lot of confidence that he's going to do the right thing with the ball. It makes play-calling a lot easier when you've got a quarterback like that, that trust factor, who has the ability to do things with the ball. He's the guy that makes us and beyond that, we've got a football team that just battles, we've got some good players that just battle like heck.”
On the interception in the end zone:
“I think that was a gigantic play and a great play by him. Two guys go up and he comes down. That's why I talk about battling, just battling for the ball. I think that was the key, key play in the ball game. That was the one we needed right there. A key factor is having great kids. I know I say that a bunch but I really mean it. If you have bad guys on your team you take two tough losses in a week your team can really fall apart. I think our leaders and the kids went right back to work, and I'm proud of what we accomplished.”
