• Carolina committed a season-high six turnovers Saturday, including four interceptions and two lost fumbles. One of the interceptions came in the end zone that resulted in a touchback and another at the Virginia Tech 1-yard line, a fumble that rolled out of the end zone for another touchback.
• Prior to today, Carolina had committed a season-high three turnovers on three occasions - against LSU, Rutgers and Miami.
• The Tar Heels have committed 14 turnovers in four losses this year and turned the ball over just six times in their six wins (three of those six were in the victory at Rutgers).
• Today marks the second straight loss in which the Tar Heels were shut out in the second half (Miami outscored UNC 20-0 in the final two quarters). Carolina has been outscored 50-21 in the second half of its four losses this year. Conversely, the Tar Heels have out-scored the six teams they have defeated by a margin of 92-26 in the second half.
• Virginia Tech now leads the series, 17-10-6.
• Senior quarterback T.J. Yates was 18 for 33 for 197 yards but was intercepted a career-high tying four times (also at South Florida in 2007).
• Yates set the all-time UNC record for pass completions, breaking Darian Durant's record of 701 on a 9-yard, second quarter pass to tight end Ed Barham. Yates finished the game with 711 career completions. He also has tied Durant for career pass attempts by a Tar Heel with 1,159.
• Running back Anthony Elzy had 17 carries for a season-high 82 yards and seven catches for a career-high 102 yards. Elzy also had a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, his first rushing touchdown of the season.
• Elzy accounted for 184 of Carolina's 314 yards from scrimmage.
• Place kicker Casey Barth converted his only extra point attempt on the day, giving him 64 consecutive made PATs. Barth also made a 20-yard field goal, making him the ACC active leader in career field goals with 42.
• Carolina scored on its opening offensive drive for the sixth time this season and the fifth time in six weeks. The Tar Heels had opening-drive touchdowns against Clemson, Virginia and Florida State, and first-possession field goals against Georgia Tech and Miami.
• Virginia Tech outgained the Tar Heels, 141-19, and outscored them, 17-0, in the third quarter.
• Carolina converted both of its fourth-down chances, making the Tar Heels now 11 for 18 on fourth down this year (61.1 percent).
