UNC vs College of Charleston
Coach Roy Williams' Opening Statement:
"I thought that our team in the second half came together more as a team with more emotion, more enthusiasm. And I think they lost themselves in the game more than we have at any point this year and I think that's the way you grow and mature as a team. I loved our poise; they go up five and (Andrew) Goudelock makes some unbelievable shots and we kept playing. And I love that. I don't want to have to call a time out and have the kids' panic. I think that you get stronger in the course of a program if the kids can figure that out themselves. But they go up five; we come down J (Justin) Knox gets fouled makes two free throws. They go up five again and I think then Reggie (Bullock) scores at that point. I think that Leslie (McDonald) might have had a field goal in that stretch as well. And I think that was big for us just keep coming, keep coming. I thought that our guys defensively really did a pretty good job on Goudelock and he just made some big time shots during the stretch."
On 200th Win:
"You know it's pleasant. There's no question that I love this place. There's no question that I feel very fortunate for me to coach here. 200. If it takes another seven years I can last that long. And hopefully I will be around that long."
College of Charleston Coach Bobby Cremins' opening statement:
"Our game plan almost worked. You know, we got a little curve ball before the game. Andrew Lawrence, one of our key subs couldn't play. That made me real nervous. So, our game plan was to hang in there with them and let's see if [Andrew] Goudelock could get hot, and it happened. We hung in there with them and then he got hot. I was really, really proud. He put on a show.
"We couldn't stop them. They're a very good team and they're going to get better and better. They're young. You know, this is a great experience for us to come here, you know, for me personally, for our program to come here and play in this environment, it's fantastic. I really appreciate Roy [Williams] playing us. I know after last year I knew it was going to be a tough one, but our kids responded.
"We're getting there. You know, we don't want to be a one-man team. We gotta let Drew Goudelock do his thing, but we can't be a one man team. We gotta get the ball... Simmons got in foul trouble; we gotta get the ball more to Simmons. We gotta get Wiggins involved. We gotta get more people involved, but when we went up five... when we went up five I thought we definitely had a chance, cause Goudelock was putting on a show, and that's when we needed some stops. We prepared hard for this game. We had a whole week to prepare, and we prepared hard for it, and we knew it was going to be tough. We knew they were going to take us serious, and I thought we played... We had a shot. We had a chance, but the game plan was to hang around until he got hot, and then he got hot, but we just couldn't maintain it. But, it's great for our program, for our kids to play in this environment, to play against this kind of competition."
"You know, like any other coach, our main games are our conference games. That's the most important games to me. I coached in the ACC. The most important games are the conference games. And, so now we start our conference schedule, and we gotta build off of these seven games that we have played, including two ACC teams. So, we got Bobby McKillup and the Davidson Wildcats coming in Thursday night. So um, we gotta be ready to play. Um, because now we have a few conference games before Christmas. You guys remember the old days, we didn't play conference games until after Christmas. [You remember those, and um, you too.] Uh, but now because of conference expansion and everything we play pre-conference games. So, I'm very proud, I'm very proud of these guys. These guys fought hard and I'm very proud of them."
UNC Player Quotes
John Henson
On Charleston's Andrew Goudelock getting hot in the second half:
"We were doing a good job in the first half in him. And in the second half, he did score a lot of points and hit a lot of shots in a row, but he did shoot, I think, 27 times. So if he shoots 11 for 27, we'll take that all day."
On scoring a team-high 19 points:
"Earlier this week I talked to coach a little bit, he came out while I was working out, and he said just kind of play within the flow and let things come to you. We both feel like I was forcing things a little bit. Thankfully tonight, I came and scored within the flow and it's a lot easier when there's not double-teams coming.
Dexter Strickland
On playing such good defense en route to defeating College of Charleston:
"Like you said, it was just me, it was my team. Everybody came to play. And [Andrew] Goudelock, he just shoots with confidence. What I had to do was stop him from getting the ball, because I knew once he got it he was going to try and get a shot. So everybody did a great job of rotating and helping out and stuff like that."
On Roy Williams' comment that this was a growing up period for the Tar Heels defensively:
"Absolutely. I think in the first half we didn't have the intensity that we did in the second half. And [Coach] got on us during halftime and told us we have got to play with more intensity. And that's what we did. We went out there and we didn't just play hard, but we had fun doing it."
Harrison Barnes
On overall performance of the team:
"That was a good win for us. We didn't play our best basketball but at the same time, we got a win against a good team, a team that beat us last year. So it feels good."
On what this win means for the team moving ahead:
"I think we kind of put the ghosts of last year behind. The lost to Charleston kind of started the downhill for last year's team. So getting the win this year, especially with all that we've been through, is good."
