CHAPEL HILL --- Jessica Breland had 14 points and 11 rebounds in her first game back after losing a season to Hodgkin's lymphoma and No. 15 North Carolina defeated Division II Carson-Newman 116-27 Monday night in an exhibition contest at Carmichael Arena. The Tar Heels ran out to a 36-0 lead to start the game and led by as many as 90 points in the win over head coach Sylvia Hatchell's alma mater.
Carolina held the visiting Eagles without a point for over 11 minutes to open a game that saw every healthy Tar Heel score at least three points. Italee Lucas led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting and was joined in double figures by Breland, She'la White, Waltiea Rolle and Latifah Coleman.
Breland scored the first four points for UNC in her first game action in nearly 18 months and Carolina never looked back. By the time Carson-Newman's Mandy Mendenhall scored with 8:35 left in the first half, the hosts were already up by more than 30, a lead they pushed to 62-6 at the intermission.
A team that struggled at times from the field in a disappointing 19-12 campaign a year ago, the Tar Heels shot 56.1 percent for the game and a sparkling 10 for 20 from beyond the arc.
Carolina forced 37 Carson-Newman turnovers and outrebounded the Eagles 60-29.
Coleman, fellow freshman Shannon Smith and third-year sophomore Candace Wood all made their Carmichael Arena debuts Monday. Coleman was especially impressive, coming off the bench to score 16 points and grab a game-high five steals. Wood, who struggled with knee injuries in her first two years in Chapel Hill, made a late three in her first appearance as a Tar Heel.
UNC opens its regular season schedule Friday afternoon at 4 against North Florida.
