Adkins Signs NLI With Tar Heels

CHAPEL HILL -- The University of North Carolina volleyball program announced the signing of Lauren Adkins to a National Letter of Intent Tuesday, revealed by head coach Joe Sagula. Adkins, a high school senior from Winter Park, Fla., will join the class of 2015 in the fall of 2011.
The Lake Howell High School product was recently named the Orlando Sentinel's Central Florida Volleyball Player of the Year. A four-year varsity starter at outside hitter, Adkins is one of prepvolleyball.com's top-100 "Senior Aces." The Winter Park, Fla., native has garnered a pair of first-team all-conference awards, team MVP awards and earned consideration for the Florida Gatorade Player of the Year in her junior season. Adkins will play in the Florida All-Star Classic game and was named to the watch list for the Under Armour All-American game in 2011.
"We are so excited to lead our 2011 recruiting class with an exceptional player such as Lauren Adkins to our volleyball program," exclaimed head coach Joe Sagula. "Her offensive skills are exceptional and complimented with a dynamic jump serve which can make her an impact player for UNC and in our conference. Lauren as an outside hitter has the potential to be a dynamic six rotation player for the Tar Heels."
Adkins will be a part of the Orlando Volleyball Academy 18 Asics Club team this year. The high school senior is a two-time competitor in the Junior Olympics. In her sophomore year of high school she competed in the American Division of the Junior Olympics placing fifth. A year later, Adkins competed in the open division of the Junior Olympics placing seventh.
"She brings high level experience playing at the national level with her club team training with OVA (Orlando Volleyball Academy) which will have her well prepared for competition here in Chapel Hill," Sagula added.
Academically, Adkins has been a member of the principal's honor roll every year at Lake Howell High School. The future Tar Heel chose North Carolina because "the great combination of academics and athletics, the atmosphere on campus and the staff and players."
Sagula concluded, "Lauren is also a great example of the excellence we strive for both on the court and in the classroom. She has the drive and passion to compete at the highest level and the character and positive attitude we admire in all our athletes here at Carolina."
Adkins will take the court for the Tar Heels as a freshman in the 2011 season.
