CHAPEL HILL N.C. - The North Carolina men's and women's fencing squads have added a dual meet against Duke to the season schedule and will host the Blue Devils on Friday evening at the Eddie Smith Field House. Action begins at 7 p.m. with women's bouts taking place on three strips. The men's competition will follow at approximately 8:15 p.m.
The faceoff with Duke is UNC's first and only home competition of the 2009-10 season. The teams met Feb. 6-7 in a multi-team meet in Durham, with host Duke winning both the men's and women's matchups.
"The Duke weekend was our weakest performance we've had all year," said UNC coach Ron Miller. "It was our most inconsistent performance - that was the main thing. We fenced well at times and awfully at times.
"Generally speaking it wasn't a great weekend. But we've had good practices since then and it should be a competitive meet for both the men and the women."
In the previous meetings, two weeks ago, Duke's men won 17-10 over the Tar Heels and the DU women won 18-9.
The one-on-one matchup is Carolina's first of the season and is becoming a rarity in collegiate fencing, in which multi-team meets are now the norm. "This is the first one we've had here against Duke in a long time," said Miller, who is in his 43rd season as the team's coach. "We haven't been able to figure out when the last one was. It's a pretty special occasion."
There is no charge for admission to the event. Following Friday's action, the Tar Heels turn their attention to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals, scheduled for March 13 in Madison. N.J.
