Carolina Gymnastics Finishes Second At Stanford

Palo Alto, Calif. - Senior Kara Wright led the University of North Carolina gymnastics team to second place in a quad-meet at No. 6 Stanford that also featured the University of California and Eastern Michigan. The Tar Heels scored a team total 193.075 while host Stanford won Sunday's meet, scoring a 196.525. The Tar Heels finished second to Stanford on every event.
"It was a good experience. We're very pleased to finish second," said head coach Derek Galvin. "Overall beam and bars were solid events for us. Wright and Brown had a good meet and Jasper was solid."
Carolina began the meet on balance beam, an event the team has been focusing on in practice and went six-for-six in hitting their routines. Seniors Christine Nguyen and Tina Jacob and junior Morgan Evans led the Tar Heels on beam, scoring a 9.675 and tying for fourth place. Junior Krista Jasper and Wright tied for 12th with a score of 9.600. Freshman Michelle Ikoma scored a 9.575 for 15th place.
"As a team, on beam we hit our routines," Galvin said. "Morgan Evans had a really nice beam routine."
Carolina competed floor exercise during the second rotation and scored a 48.075. Wright tied for third place with a 9.875, the highest individual Carolina score on Sunday. Sophomore Taylor Brown placed eighth after scoring a 9.800. Ikoma and junior Karli Jones finished in a four-way tie for 13th place with 9.625. Nguyen scored a 9.150 and placed 22nd after falling on her first tumbling pass and tweaking her knee.
"On floor we had some strong routines," Galvin said. "Taylor Brown did a very strong routine and Wright also had a nice routine."
Wright led the Tar Heels on vault, tying for fourth with a score of 9.800. Jones tied for seventh place with a 9.750 and Nguyen finished in a tie for 11th with a 9.625. Nguyen competed a different vault in order to protect her knee. Brown scored a 9.600 and tied for 14th place and Evans followed in 17th place with a 9.550. As a team Carolina scored a 48.325 on vault.
The Tar Heels ended the afternoon on uneven bars where they scored a team total 48.450. Wright was once again the top Carolina competitor, scoring a 9.750 and placing seventh. Nguyen finished eighth with a score of 9.725 and Jasper took ninth place with a 9.700. Ikoma tied for 10th place with a score of 9.675 and Brown finished in a tie for 14th place after scoring a 9.600. Jacob scored a 9.550 and tied for 17th place.
Wright finished second in the all-around to Stanford's Allyse Ishino. Nguyen and Ikoma tied for sixth place.
The Tar Heels return to action on Friday, March 5 when they travel to Gainesville, Fla. to face No. 4 Florida and Ball State at 7 p.m. The matchup with the Gators will be Carolina's third-straight meet against a top-10 team.
