Wright Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Kara Wright won the all-around title and led the Carolina gymnastics team to the conference championship and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for March 22-28, 2010. The senior from Virginia Beach, Va., tied her personal best and helped the Tar Heels capture their fourth EAGL Championship. Wright finished second on uneven bars (9.875), third on floor exercise (9.875), fourth on vault (9.850) and 13th on balance beam (9.725) in the eight-team competition. The Virginia Beach, Va. native was also named the 2010 EAGL Scholar-Athlete of the Year at the annual EAGL banquet on Friday night.

Dickey, a freshman third baseman from Woodstock, Ga., set a school record this past week when she hit three home runs in one game against UNC Wilmington. The previous record of two in a single game had been accomplished by eleven previous Carolina batters. Dickey has started all but one game at third base since taking over the position during the Georgia Tech series last weekend.

Freshman Courtney Gunter tied for 17th place at last weekend¹s Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga. Gunter carded rounds of 75-76-77 for a 12-over-par 228 total. Gunter led Carolina to a tie for seventh place with a 928 total. The 54-hole event was play at the University of Georgia Golf Course which features a par 72, 6,335-yard layout.

Donohoe led all scorers with four goals and four points as fourth-ranked Carolina scored 13 consecutive goals and won on the road at 18th-ranked Boston College, 15-6, on Saturday. The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead, holding the Tar Heels scoreless for the first 22 minutes of the game, before Carolina ripped off 13 consecutive scores to dominate the remainder of the game and win 15-6. After trailing 4-0, Donohoe scored two of UNC's four goals to end the first half and tie the game at the break, then scored twice more (including the game-winner) in a 9-0 run that started the second half and sealed the win.

Donato helped the Tar Heels remain perfect in the ACC with four wins in back-to-back matches this past weekend, leading North Carolina to victories against Maryland and Boston College. He defeated a ranked player, Boston College's Tommy Laine, in singles, and upset BC's 27th-ranked team of Thomas Nolan and Erik Kreutzer in doubles. UNC has now won eight straight matches thanks in a large part to Donato's play. Donato is now ranked 39th in the nation in singles and 54th in doubles with Stefan Hardy.

Felnagle opened her final season of collegiate eligibility, after not having run under Carolina's colors since the 2009 indoor season, in the 5000 meters. She did so by breaking a personal record and reaching the top-three all-time times in the UNC school records for the women's 5000. Her time of 15:55.29 earned her third place in the event.

Junior Matt Harvey was masterful in seven innings Friday against No.3 Georgia Tech. He suffers the tough luck loss, his first of the season, after allowing two runs, only one earned, and being outdueled by Georgia Tech's Deck McGuire. In Harvey's last two starts, against top-five league opponents Florida State and Georgia Tech, he has allowed just one earned run on five hits in 14 innings while recording 22 strikeouts.

Freshman Marcus Holman took advantage of his last-minute chance to start his first-ever ACC game as he scored four goals and added an assist in UNC's 9-7 victory over fourth-ranked and previously undefeated Maryland. With first-team All-America Billy Bitter a last minute scratch from the lineup because of a leg injury, Holman stepped in and led the Tar Heels to only their second regular-season win over the Terps since 1996. Holman scored Carolina's last three goals of the game as UNC snuffed out any chance the Terrapins had for a second-half rally. Holman's four goals tied the career high he had against Navy earlier this year and his five points were a career high.

Tommy Wyher was named a first-team All-America in the 100-yard butterfly and an honorable mention All-America in three other events as he helped lead UNC to its best NCAA Championships finish since 1996. UNC finished 15th at the national meet with big help from Wyher who placed fifth in the 100-yard butterfly and 13th in the 100-yard backstroke, both swum on the same day at NCAAs. He set an ACC record in the 100-yard backstroke as the leadoff swimmer on UNC's school record-setting 400-yard medley relay team, going 45.93 on the first leg. He swam on UNC relays which finished 11th (400 free relay) and 14th (400 medley relay).
