Tar Heels Lead Wolfpack Intercollegiate After Two Rounds

RALEIGH, N.C. - After the first round of the Wolfpack Intercollegiate, the North Carolina men's golf team sat sixth in the 18-team field. But early in the second round the Heels grabbed the lead and held on, shooting four-under-par thanks to a series of phenomenal individual performances.
Overall, the Heels shot a 10-over-par 578, giving them a seven stroke lead over local rivals and hosts N.C. State. Duke is eight strokes back in third place followed by fellow ACC rivals Florida State and Georgia Tech, both of whom are ranked in the top 20 nationally.
Senior Chase MacFarland, who was 28th after the first round, is currently alone in second place, one stroke behind Florida State's Drew Kittleson. The Savannah, Ga., native followed up a four-over-par 75 with a three-under-par 68, giving him a total of 143. Junior Henry Zaytoun III, from Raleigh, N.C., is close on MacFarland's heels, currently tied with two others for third place. Zaytoun played at a consistently high level all day, shooting a two-over-par 73 and an even-par 71 for a total of 144.
Junior Kevin O'Connell, from Cary, N.C., finished tied for 19th ended with a five-over-par 147, losing two and three strokes through the two rounds, respectively. Sophomore Jack Fields, a Southern Pines, N.C., native, came back from 50th place in the second round to tie for 24th place. Fields shot an even-par 71 in the second round and six over par for the tournament. Freshman Michael McGowan, also from Southern Pines, is tied for 44th. McGowan pulled his 11-over-par 81 back with an outstanding one-under-par 70.
The Heels will look to maintain their form over the last round of the 54-hole event, which takes place at the brand new par-71, 7,358-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course. Duke is the defending champion of the tournament.
