CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- Chris Munnelly tossed six scoreless innings and Colin Bates pitched the final three innings for his first save of the season as No. 25 North Carolina blanked Charlotte, 5-0, in a non-conference matchup Wednesday night at Hayes Stadium. Ben Bunting, Levi Michael, Jesse Wierzbicki and Dillon Hazlett each had two hits for the Tar Heels, who will take the rest of the week off for final exams.
Carolina (27-17) got the only run it would need in the top of the first inning, as Wierzbicki's two-out single plated Mike Cavasinni.
The Tar Heels added single runs in the fourth and sixth in support of Munnelly, who did not allow a runner past second in his six innings of work. The Winston-Salem freshman yielded just four hits and walked only one while striking out five in improving to 2-1 on the season.
With UNC leading 3-0 in the eighth, Charlotte (29-10) mounted its strongest threat of the night against Bates.
The 49ers had one on and two out when Justin Wilson singled through the right side to bring the tying run to the plate. But Bates got Ryan Rivers to chase his 2-2 offering and Wierzbicki, who had just moved to catcher, fired to first for the third out to end the rally.
Carolina added a pair of unearned runs in the ninth and Bates closed it out to give the Tar Heels their fifth win in six tries heading into the exam break.
Michael's two-hit effort extended his hitting streak to a career-high 11 games, while Hazlett pushed his run to a personal-best 10 straight.
Tim Lysaught (4-3) took the loss for Charlotte despite allowing just one run over three innings. Wilson led the 49er offense with a pair of singles and a walk.
Munnelly and Bates combined to face just seven more than the minimum, issuing just one walk and not giving up an extra-base hit.
UNC will now focus on final exams until next Monday when the Tar Heels host Elon at 6 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
