DURHAM, N.C. - The University of North Carolina track and field program started its triple-header weekend on Friday at the Duke Invitational where the majority of the team competed with marginal success. A handful of individuals also traveled to Gainesville, Fla., for the Florida Relays or to Austin, Texas, for the Texas Relays where they encountered nationally ranked competition.
On Duke's campus, Tar Heel men and women competed across the gamut. The highest finish any individual earned for Carolina was Michelle Newman in the triple jump. Newman took second after jumping a length of 40-11. Briana Hudson and Chrishawn Williams also competed in the triple jump, with Hudson taking third for her 39-8 3/4 leap and Williams reaching 37-2 1/2.
Abby Kimball and Ashley Wyatt carded two top-eight performances with Kimball clearing 12-1 1/2 for third place and Wyatt 11-9 3/4 for sixth. Another third-place finish came in the women's javelin, where Amanda Nappi grasped that ranking with her throw of 137-9. Kacey James also threw javelin reaching 108-4.
In distance events for the women, several Tar Heels eased into outdoor action. The 1500 saw Callan Fike take sixth place in 4:37.28 and Michelle Britto run 4:43.90. Mariana Lucena and Veronica Wallington challenged the 3000 and clocked 10:19.37 and 10:37.29, respectively. In the 5000, Cara Hayes ran 18:10.90 and Michelle Lutz finished in 18:29.70.
The men put on a strong showing in the high jump at the Duke Invitational with four Tar Heels competing. Mateo Sossah took home fourth at 6-8 1/4 followed by fellow multi Daniel Keller in sixth at 6-7. Travis Leonard took tenth for the same 6-7 based on clearing standards. Matthew Villemain also competed reaching 6-2 3/4.
Sossah and Keller joined three others in the 400-meter hurdles, where Sossah led the team with his third-place finish in 53.32. Keller ran in 55.41, followed by Reynaldo Radlin in 55.43 and Chadd Pierce in 56.18. Kenneth Andoll started the hurdles but did not finish.
Keller went on to throw the javelin where he placed ninth at 170-8. Brian Doran threw javelin ahead of Keller to take home fourth at 184-10, a new personal record. Alex Cremer ran the only men's distance event for Carolina, the 1500, and finished in 4:08.62.
In Gainesville, Fla., Patience Coleman tied for second in the high jump where she reached 5-9. In the 400-meter hurdles, LaToya James placed third in 56.63 while Vanneisha Ivy took seventh in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.39. Ivy also ran the 200 dash, but her 24.22 time did not place in the top-eight. Christine Johnson won her heat of the 400 in 55.06 while teammate Elizabeth Mott ran the same event in 55.27. Tasha Stanley took on the 800 to finish fourth in 2:09.55.
The men in Gainesville, Fla., competed hard in the 400 but only Charles Cox placed in the top-eight. Cox ran in 46.06 for third place. By juxtaposition of just how close the field was, Clayton Parros was at 47.63 and Ian Williamson, who won his heat, ran 47.91 but despite being close to Cox's time they did not make the top-eight. Rick Goettel also ran in the 400 at 49.94. Kelvin Hardesty was the final Tar Heel male to compete at the Florida Relays, sprinting 10.56 in the 100 dash.
In Austin, Texas, Tyler Ford brought home seventh in the long jump leaping 18-10 3/4. Ford also ran the qualifying round for the 100 in 12.04 but did not make the final.
Carolina finishes competition on Saturday at all three meets. Live scoring for the Duke Invitational is available at Flash Results, for the Florida Relays at Half Mile Timing and for the Texas Relays by Texas Sports
