Sophomore forward Ed Davis became the 40th first-round pick in University of North Carolina history when the Toronto Raptors chose him with the 13th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft on Thursday night in New York City.
Davis is the fourth first-round pick for the Tar Heels in the last two seasons after Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington were first-round choices in 2009. Davis is the fifth member of the 2009 NCAA champions to be drafted.
He played two seasons at Carolina, becoming the third-fastest Tar Heel to block 100 shots in history. He blocked his 100th shot in his 51st game - only Rasheed Wallace (47th game) and Sam Perkins (50th game) reached triple digits in fewer games. He averaged 9.2 points and 7.7 rebounds and blocked 129 shots as a Tar Heel.
Davis becomes the seventh NBA lottery pick from UNC in the last six Drafts, joining Marvin Williams (2nd overall, 2005), Raymond Felton (5th, 2005), Sean May (13th, 2005), Rashad McCants (14th, 2005), Brandan Wright (8th, 2007) and Hansbrough (13th, 2009).
Davis averaged 13.4 points and 9.6 rebounds in 23 games last season before breaking his wrist in February against Duke and missing the rest of the season. He was first in the Atlantic Coast Conference in blocked shots and field goal percentage and second in rebounding before his injury.
Carolina's 40 first-round picks and 97 overall NBA Draft choices are both ACC highs. The Tar Heels' 29 first-round draft picks since 1980 are most in the nation.
