Former Carolina forward Deon Thompson, a 2010 UNC graduate, has signed a contract with Ikaros Esperos (Greece) for the 2010-2011 season, Thompson's agent Jim Tanner has announced.
"I am thrilled to have the chance to play professionally," said Thompson. "It is something that I've always dreamed of doing and I'm excited about the opportunity to take my game to the next level and to live overseas."
The only returning starter from 2009 national championship team, Thompson set the NCAA record for most games played with 152 and scored 1,414 points, grabbed 743 rebounds and blocked 141 shots over his career. The Tar Heels went 121-31 in his career (101-14 in his first three seasons). After graduating in May, Thompson played in the NBA Summer League for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
A sociology major at UNC, Thompson led Tar Heels in scoring and finished second in rebounding his senior year (2009-10). He was fifth in the ACC in field goal percentage, eighth in offensive rebounding, 12th in scoring and 14th in rebounding, averaging 13.7 points and 6.7 boards.
"Ikaros Esperos signed Deon because they recognized his record-setting accomplishments and strong work-ethic at Carolina as well as his tremendous potential as a professional," said Tanner. "Deon is also a proven leader. He will be a great addition to their team."
Ikaros Esperos is in the Greek A1 league (First Division in Greece). In 2009-10, the team won the 2nd Division in Greece and earned the right to play in the top division.
