WILMINGTON, N.C. - The No. 4 ranked North Carolina men's soccer team opened the 2010 exhibition season with a 1-0 win at UNC Wilmington Saturday night. Redshirt freshman Josh Rice found the back of the net in the 89th minute to take down the Seahawks.
In an exhibition match that saw 21 different Tar Heels take to the pitch UNC was able to snatch away a late victory from UNC Wilmington, 1-0, on a Josh Rice goal. Rice turned at the top of the 18-yard box and fired off a shot that bounced off the left post and into the back of the net just before time expired. Rice's goal came seconds after Enzo Martinez attempted a shot that was blocked at the 88:38 mark.
The Tar Heels went with a young lineup from the opening kick as newcomers Anton Sealey, Jalil Anibaba, Bruno Castro, Carlos McCrary, Robbie Lovejoy and Glen Long were all among head coach Elmar Bolowich's starting 11. Bolowich also welcomed back a pair of seniors who redshirted a year ago in the form of Eddie Ababio and Stephen McCarthy. McCarthy went 45 minutes as a starter in the midfield, while Ababio came on at the half and turned in 45 minutes on the Carolina backline.
Rice and McCrary led the Tar Heels with three shots apiece on the day, while Long and Martinez each tallied a pair. Carolina out shot UNC Wilmington by an 11-5 margin and earned three corner kicks.
Sophomore Scott Goodwin earned the start in net for the Tar Heels and posted a pair of saves, one in each half. Goodwin went all 90 minutes in the net for Carolina earning the win after posting a 3-0 record in limited action in 2009.
Carolina will return to action next week when the Tar Heels travel down I-40 once again to take on UNC Greensboro Aug. 28 at 7 p.m.
