CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Seven players contributed a goal apiece as top-ranked North Carolina presented head coach Anson Dorrance with his 700th career victory Saturday as the Tar Heels defeated Tennessee 7-2 before a crowd of 1,582 fans at sun-drenched Fetzer Field. UNC is now 700-36-23 in Dorrance's 32 seasons as head coach, including a 4-0-1 mark to begin the 2010 campaign.
Balanced scoring was the Tar Heels' mantra for the second straight game. UNC got seven goals from seven players Saturday, including one each from the team's six leading scorers going into the game. This performance comes on the heels of a 6-1 win over Missouri last Sunday when six Tar Heels scored in the match. In fact, in scoring 21 times in five games the Tar Heels have yet to a have a player record a two-goal game.
The Tar Heels put this game away early by scoring three goals in the opening 10:12 of the match and adding a fourth before the 20-minute mark of the match. Carolina eventually took a 5-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. The match was very similar to the last game the two teams played at Fetzer Field on November 18, 2006 when the Heels beat the Lady Vols 6-2 in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Carolina scored the first six goals in that contest and then nearly repeated that feat by scoring the first five Saturday.
Overall the Tar Heels outshot the Lady Vols 26-6. Carolina had 12 corner kicks to one for the Lady Vols. Molly Baird, a Raleigh native, played all 90 minutes in goal for Tennessee, allowing seven goals and making eight saves. The Tar Heels employed three different goalkeepers with Hannah Daly playing the first 60:27, Adelaide Gay the next 14:09 and Amanda Tucker the final 15:24.
Under sunny skies with temperatures in the low 80s, the Tar Heels burst out of the gate with a strong effort. It took just 6:41 for freshman Kealia Ohai to score her fourth goal of the season. She gathered in a ball off a deflection in the midfield, split two defenders with her blazing speed and finished off the breakaway with a strike from 15 yards out.
Less than three minutes later Carolina doubled its lead on defender Megan Brigman's first career goal. Meghan Klingenberg sent a swinging cross into the box from the left side and Brigman ran on to it at the far post to head it home at the 9:10 mark. It took just another 1:02 for the Heels to make it 3-0. Rachel Wood's free kick from 40 yards out hit off the cross bar and Courtney Jones' hustle paid off as she ran on to the ball and buried a header past Baird just before colliding with UT keeper.
The Tar Heels made it 4-0 at 19:27 of the match on Alyssa Rich's third goal of the 2010 campaign. Kealia Ohai sent a pass to Rich who gathered it in at the top of the 18, finishing into the lower left corner. The Tar Heels scored once more before halftime as junior forward Brittani Bartok got her third goal of the season with an assist by sophomore midfielder Ranee Premji. Bartok finished into the top left corner from 12 yards out on the right side with the goal coming at 41:13 into the match.
UT would strike back with the opening two goals of the second half. Just seconds after Adelaide Gay entered the match in goal, the junior had to face a penalty kick when Emily Dowd was taken down in the box by a UNC defender. Emily Shore stepped up for the Lady Vols and scored on the PK to make it 5-1 with 61:03 elapsed. The Tar Heels made another goalie change with 15:24 left and Amanda Tucker faced a difficult situation just two minutes later. The Lady Volunteers had a breakaway and Tucker had to come out of the box to clear the ball away. Chelsea Hatcher gathered in the ball 35 yards away and one-timed a shot that bounced off a UNC defender into the goal. It was Hatcher's second goal of the campaign.
The Tar Heel offense got both goals back, however, as Amber Brooks and Elizabeth Burchenal scored goals in the final 10 minutes of the match. Brooks scored at the 81:22 mark of the match off assists by sophomore Barkley Minton and sophomore Rachel Wood. Wood sent a free kick from about 45 yards out into the center of the penalty area where Minton chested it down and Brooks finished off the scoring chance just steps away from the goal line. It was the third goal of the season for Brooks.
The final tally of the game came at 84:29 as Elizabeth Burchenal headed home a goal from the seven-yard line off a corner kick by Meghan Klingenberg. It was Burchenal's second goal of the season.
Carolina will travel to the West Coast next weekend to play Cal Poly Friday at 10 p.m. EDT in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Next Sunday the Tar Heels will play at San Diego State at 4:30 p.m. EDT.
