Barnes Named Tar Heel Performer Of The Week

Harrison Barnes, a freshman forward from Ames, Iowa, is the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for January 24-30, 2010. Barnes scored a season- and game-high 25 points on 10 of 16 shooting from the field in Carolina's 84-64 win over NC State. He had 12 first-half points, including 11 of the Tar Heels' first 13 points as UNC raced out to a 13-2 advantage. His three-pointer ended a Wolfpack run after State closed to within 11 points, the closest the Pack came in the second half. Barnes added six rebounds. Barnes had 13 points and two steals in a 74-71 win at Miami. He connected on UNC's last two field goals - a fadeaway, 18-foot jumper with just over a minute to play to tie the game at 71 and a three-pointer from the corner as the shot clock expired with 6.6 seconds remaining for the win.

Sophomore Katie Nolan won two individual events and swam on two winning relays to power North Carolina past NC State 199.5-99.5 in women's swimming and diving action. Nolan captured both the 100-yard backstroke in 57.07 and the 100-yard freestyle in 52.28. She also swam on the butterfly leg on Carolina's 400-yard medley relay which won in 3:47.43 and then anchored the victorious 200-yard freestyle relay which won in a time of 1:34.37.

Junior Wil Singley took first place in two individual events to power North Carolina past arch-rival NC State 177-123 in a closely contested meet. Singley won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a season best time of 9:26.53, more than eight seconds faster than his previous season best and seven seconds faster than the second-place finisher in the event. With the meet still undecided, Singley won the 200-yard individual medley in the next-to-last event with aseason best 1:52.84, edging NC State's Kohl Hurdle by .59 of a second and clinching the victory for Carolina as it improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the ACC.

Jose had another great showing this weekend in the ITA Team Indoor Qualifying hosted by Georgia. Jose posted one singles and two doubles victories against top-15 opponents and only lost one match to Georgia's No. 1 player, which was essentially played as a home match for the Bulldogs in Athens, Ga. His upset of 13th-ranked Guillermo Gomez helped spark a rally that ended with the Tar Heels pulling out a 4-3 victory against ACC opponent Georgia Tech. Even in UNC's loss to Georgia on Sunday, Jose and his doubles partner, Brennan Boyajian, managed to upset the Bulldog's 14th-ranked doubles team in a tiebreaker.

Patience Coleman, a senior from Durham, N.C., took first in the women' high jump Saturday at the UNC-Kent Taylor Run for the Kids Invitational. Coleman's winning jump of 5-10 3/4 gives her the top mark in the ACC this season, and moves her into the No. 12 spot in the NCAA. Coleman earned All-ACC honors as the highjump runner-up at the 2010 ACC Indoor Championships with the same height of5-10 3/4.

Junior Morgan Evans won her third-straight all-around gymnastics title in a Tar Heel victory against William & Mary. Evans paced the competition throughout the meet, winning two separate events and placing no lower than fourth place. She started the meet off by winning the bars competition with a score of 9.775. She continued to vault, scoring a 9.7 for third place and then onto floor exercise where she placed fourth at a 9.775. Evans topped the competition again on balance beam posting a 9.800. This led to an all-around score of 39.050, enough for first place.

Senior Parker Smith, of Highlands Ranch, Col., broke the Wesley A. Brown Field House record in the men's pole vault at the Navy Wesley Brown Invitational Saturday in Annapolis, Md. Smith's winning vault of 17-0 3/4 broke the Navy facility record, set in 2008, by more than three inches. Smith is ranked No. 18 in the NCAA with his second-place 17-1 jump last weekend at the Virginia Tech Invitational.

Shinann Featherston rallied from down a set and down 1-3 in the third to defeat No. 97 Maho Kowase at No. 2 singles and clinch a 4-3 win over No. 15 Georgia in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Rockaway Park, N.Y., junior also paired with Lauren McHale at No. 1 doubles to defeat Georgia?s top team of Chelsey Gullickson and Kate Fuller, 8-6, to clinch the doubles point.

Laura Broomfield notched her third and fourth double-doubles of the season in a pair of wins over Virginia and Virginia Tech. The Lexington Park, Md., native had 13 points and 10 boards against the Cavaliers and added 14 points and 10 boards against the Hokies. Broomfield averaged 13.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in the two games, starting both in the absence of Jessica Breland and Chay Shegog who were out with injuries.
