CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--North Carolina swept a doubleheader against UNC Wilmington Sunday from Anderson Stadium. The Tar Heels remain undefeated in the fall portion of their schedule. UNC next takes the field against the NPF Back to School Tour Saturday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m. The game with the NPF will be played at Dail Stadium in Raleigh, N.C.
GAME ONE
Kelli Wheeler drew a walk to get things going in the top of the first inning. Tisha Mahon pushed a hard grounder through the 3-4 hole to advance Wheeler. Senior Ally Blake followed with a shot to center, scoring Wheeler and Mahon. Blake was then brought home on a double to right center from Haleigh Dickey. Freshman Jenna Kelly capped the Carolina scoring by lining a ball over the right field fence for a two-run home run, giving the Tar Heels a commanding 5-0 lead.
Sara Buchholz started in the circle and made quick work of the Seahawk batters with a three-up, three-down half inning.
Wheeler again ignited the offense in the second frame with a single to right. Blake then roped a double to the center field fence to bring Wheeler home. Dickey followed that up by sending a ball over deep right center, increasing the Tar Heels' lead to 8-0.
The defense continued to look sharp, highlighted by a great play from Paige Williams at shortstop. For the entire game, Buchholz kept the UNCW offense to only three batters per inning en route to a five-inning 8-0 shutout of the Seahawks.
GAME TWO
The second matchup was scoreless until the fourth inning, when Jordan Scarboro led off with a hard grounder up the middle. With two outs, Kelly battled in the batter's box to hit a shot to center field, scoring Scarboro.
Ashley Bone drew a base on balls in the fifth before Constance Orr followed with a monster two-run homerun over the left field fence to give UNC a 3-0 victory.
