Burkhardt & Boyajian Advance To Doubles Semifinals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's Joey Burkhardt and Brennan Boyajian have advanced to the semifinals of doubles of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Carolinas Regional Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heel duo won a pair of matches Saturday and will meet an Elon doubles team Sunday at 9 a.m. in the semifinals.
In addition, Burkhardt and William Parker of UNC advanced to the Round of 16 in singles action.
In the round of 16 in doubles, Burkhardt and Boyajian, the No. 2 seeds, defeated Jacob Behal and Andrew Mellow of Furman 9-8, winning the tiebreaker 7-2. In the same round, Danny Kreyman and Adam Lee of Wake Forest defeated William Parker and Oystein Steiro of UNC 8-5.
Burkhardt and Boyajian then crushed the Duke tandem of Luke Marchese and Torsten Wietoska 8-1 in the quarterfinals. The UNC duo advances to meet sixth-seeded Cameron Silverman and Eric Turner of Elon Sunday at 9 a.m. in semifinal play.
In singles play Saturday, two Tar Heels prevailed in Round of 32 matches. Joe Burkhardt downed Sam Williams of UNC Wilmington 6-2, 6-0 in straight set domination while William Parker routed 14th-seeded Jason Tahir of Duke 6-3, 6-1.
Three other UNC players fell in the Round of 32 in singles. Freshman Esben Hess-Olesen fell to Nick Jones of South Carolina 7-5, 6-4 and fellow freshman Oystein Steiro fell by an identical score to Danny Kreyman of Wake Forest. In the most competitive match of the day, Joe Burkhardt lost a tough three-setter to Torsten Wietoska of Duke 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
