CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Win No. 400 at Carmichael Arena for No. 16 North Carolina was bittersweet for the Tar Heels as they beat Presbyterian 61-38 on Tuesday.
Chay Shegog scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Tar Heels (4-0), but they took a tough blow to their lineup as sophomore guard Latifah Coleman suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first half.
"We've got to be mentally tougher," coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "It was a slowdown-type game and we've got to learn how to play in different situations. Presbyterian did a good job clogging up the middle, and Chay was tough in there and did a good job."
Shegog used her 6-foot-5 height to advantage against the smaller Presbyterian defenders to hit 8 of 12 from the floor, and she got to the foul line numerous times, hitting 7 of 12.
"I thought the middle was really wide open," Shegog said. "They double-teamed me a lot so I'm surprised I got that many points."
Coleman was coming off her season-high of 25 minutes in her last outing against UNC Greensboro, as well as hitting her career-high of 11 points two games ago.
"I hate it for Latifah because she's been playing really, really well," Hatchell said. "She brings so much energy to the team. Some of the other ones are going to have to step up in that situation."
The Tar Heels built a 30-13 halftime lead and despite the deficit, Presbyterian coach Ronny Fisher said he was pleased by his team's defensive effort.
"This was a team that was averaging almost 90 points a game, and to hold them to 30 at halftime was good," Fisher said. "When you're playing against athletes of this caliber, it takes a whole lot to compete. We've got to learn to do that, but we'll be better in the next game because of it."
The Tar Heels shot a paltry 37.7 percent (23 of 61) from the floor and committed 19 turnovers. But North Carolina was stingy on defense, holding the Blue Hose (2-3) to only 14-of-54 shooting (25.9 percent) and forcing 21 turnovers.
Laura Broomfield and She'la White added 10 points each for North Carolina, while Kristen Stevens finished with 11 to lead Presbyterian.
