Tar Heels Kick Off Season At Temple Open

The North Carolina fencing squads opened the 2011-12 season at the Temple Open in Philadelphia Nov. 5 and 6, with strong showings in all weapons. Three women turned in top 10 finishes on Saturday, and seven men registered top 10 finishes in competition on Saturday.
For the women, Allie Mead took second in women's epee and Lidea Shahidi was seventh in a field of 92 fencers. Other Tar Heels in the field were Kacie Albert (14th), Emily Kowalczyk (24th), Shannon Beamon (30th), Meghan Herwig (54th) and Leslie Finch (67th).
In women's sabre, Gillian Litynski tied for third in a field of 87. Also representing the Tar Heels in sabre were Gladys Manzur (18th), Sara Leung (24th), Aislinn Klos (28th), Samantha Reeves (54th), Brie Mittan (56th), Maura Thornton (65th) and Vicki Burton (74th)
UNC's highest finisher in women's foil was Wynton Wong, who placed 32nd of 86. Also in the field were Brianna Osinski (37th), Heather Van Wallendael (41st), Sarah Flinn (66th) and Rachel Deary (76th).
For the men on Sunday, Maxwell Tice-Lewis tied for third in epee and Daniel Giles took fifth. In a field of 100, Hayden Haberle was 17th, Parker Williams 26th, Brad Deal 58th and Jordan Larson 59th.
In men's foil. Joe Alter tied for third and Kevin Nadeau was fifth to lead the way for Carolina. Also competing in the field of 89 were Harry Adams (27th), Will Woliver-Jones (31st), JeeHo Kim (33rd), Ian Kanar (35th), Andrew Wright (36th) and Chris McGough (71st).
In men's sabre, three Tar Heels were in the top 10, with Jonathan Blake fifth, Nate Wiecha sixth and Samuel Austin seventh. Also in the field were Matthew Bond (49th), Gerard Iervolino (54th), Duc Doan (T55th) and Aaron Pritchard (T94th).
