February 15, 2026 | Fencing
CINCINNATI, OHIO - Fencing brought home two top ten finishes at the February North American Cup on Sunday, February 15.
Elizabeth Zigalo had the best finish of any current Carolina fencer this weekend as she finished seventh in Division 1 Women's Epee. Zigalo kicked off the direct elimination round with a five-point victory after her BYE. Zigalo then faced off against her teammate, Mariasole Capellua, in the round of 64 and came out on top 15-9. Zigalo won two more bouts before she fell in the round of eight.
Vasko Atanassov notched his second top 25 finish of as he finished ninth in the Junior Men's Sabre division. Atanassov set himself up for success, having a great pool round and tying with multiple fencers for the number two overall seed. The freshman earned a BYE in the first round and won the second round (128) by 9 points. Atanassov won his next two bouts by twelve and three points. Those last two wins put him into the round of 16, where he ultimately fell to Silas Choi from Princeton and the eventual champion of the event.
