The Tar Heels were shut out for the first time since a 7-0 home loss to Georgia Tech on Nov. 11, 2006. This is the first time NC State has blanked Carolina since the Wolfpack won, 3-0, on Sept. 24, 1960. It is the first time UNC has failed to score against State in Raleigh since 1921.
Redshirt freshman tailback Giovani Bernard became the 15th Tar Heel to rush for 1,000 or more yards in a season as he gained 47 yards Saturday to push his season total to 1,012 yards. That is the 25th time a Tar Heel has gained 1,000 yards, and the first since Jonathan Linton in 1997.
Bernard is the third UNC freshman to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, joining Amos Lawrence in 1977 and Leon Johnson in 1993.
Bernard has rushed 186 times for 1,012 yards and 11 touchdowns this year, an average of 101.2 yards per game. He now ranks 22nd in school history in single-season rushing yards, tied with Leon Johnson's total from 1993.
The Tar Heels rushed for three net yards, their fewest this season and the fewest since they rushed for minus seven yards against NC State a year ago in Chapel Hill.
Carolina also passed for a season-low 162 yards (previous was 178 vs. Louisville) and compiled a season-low 165 total yards (previous low was 264 vs. Louisville).
Wide receiver Dwight Jones tied his season high with nine receptions for 72 yards. It was the third time this year he caught nine passes in a game (also James Madison and Miami). Jones has 63 catches this year, which equals the fifth-most in a season by a Tar Heel. He has 130 career receptions, which is eighth most by a Tar Heel.
Bryn Renner was 9 for 17 for 76 yards and two interceptions. Renner's previous lows this year were 12 completions against Louisville and 143 yards vs. Virginia.
Braden Hanson came on in relief of an injured Renner at quarterback and completed 7 of 13 passes for 86 yards. He came into the game 3 of 8 for 59 yards in his career.
