CHAPEL HILL - Members of the University of North Carolina men's basketball team helped brighten the holiday season for a number of area families on Thursday, continuing an annual tradition under head coach Roy Williams.
Players shopped at a local Target store and purchased toys and other gifts, putting proceeds from the sale of team-autographed basketballs to good use. Each player on the team received the wish list from a local family and had $75 per child to spend on gifts and clothing requested by the family members.
"Coach Williams always stresses the importance of giving back to the community and remembering how fortunate we are," says assistant coach Jerod Haase, who organized the shopping. "This is a good way to do that by using money the team makes from selling autographed balls."
