The University of North Carolina gymnastics team will face Penn State on Friday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. Carolina hopes to upset the No. 18 Nittany Lions in their second home meet of the season.
"We are ready for another exciting competition," said Head Coach Derek Galvin. "The team and the coaching staff are eager to have our second home meet and we are excited to have Penn State coming in. They are a good team and so are we. It's going to be an exciting event for spectators to watch."
"The team has got a really good attitude about competing. They know that in every competition we have the opportunity to step out and improve upon what we did the week before and that's the goal--to improve upon our team performance."
The Tar Heels have been working on upgrading their routines in practice over the past two weeks. In the meet against Maryland upgrades paid off, winning high scores with the judges. Coach Galvin said to expect to see these upgrades again as well as a few lineup shifts.
"Last week we added a couple new vaults and switched some tumbling passes around," said Galvin. "We haven't made as many changes this week as it was a short week of preparation."
The Tar Heels would like to break the attendance record for gymnastics against the Penn State Nittany Lions. It will be the second home meet of the season in newly renovated Carmichael Arena.
"We want people to come and enjoy the excitement of college gymnastics--the artistic beauty of it, the athletic excitement of it," said Galvin. "We've got a tremendous venue; Carmichael arena is a fantastic arena for gymnastics. People should come and give it a try and I think they'll want to come back."
The meet will begin at 7 p.m. in Carmichael Arena. Admission is free.
