CHAPEL HILL --- Seven home games and an ESPN Thursday night road game at Virginia Tech highlight the University of North Carolina's 2011 football schedule, released Monday by the Atlantic Coast Conference. Season tickets are already on sale and may be purchased on TarHeelBlue.com.
Carolina's home slate features games against James Madison (Sept. 3), Rutgers (Sept. 10), Virginia (Sept. 17), Louisville (Oct. 8), Miami (Oct. 15), Wake Forest (Oct. 29) and Duke (Nov. 26). This is the first time Carolina has opened the season with three straight home games since 2006.
The Tar Heels will go on the road to face Georgia Tech (Sept. 24), East Carolina (Oct. 1), Clemson (Oct. 22) and Virginia Tech (Nov. 17). Seven of Carolina's 12 opponents played in a bowl last season.
Schedule Notes
This is just the 13th time in school history and the seventh time since the ACC began that Carolina has opened the year with three consecutive home games. The other times were 2006, 1993, 1981, 1973, 1964, 1957, 1927, 1902, 1901, 1899, 1898 and 1897.
Carolina will play in Blacksburg, Va., on a Thursday night at 8 p.m. for the second time in the last three years. The Tar Heels defeated the Hokies, 20-17, on a Casey Barth field goal as time expired in 2009.
The Tar Heels face Wake Forest for the first time since 2007 and the first time in Kenan Stadium since 2006.
Head coach Butch Davis will make his first trip to Clemson as head coach of the Tar Heels. Carolina last played at Clemson in 2006 under John Bunting.
North Carolina and Rutgers will meet for the fourth time in the last six years on Sept. 10 in Chapel Hill. Carolina is 2-1 in the three previous meetings, including a 44-12 road win in 2008 and a 17-13 road win last year.
Carolina and East Carolina will be meeting for the fourth time in the last five years. The Tar Heels are 2-1 in the three previous meetings, including a 31-17 win in 2009 and a 42-17 win in 2010. UNC's last appearance in Greenville resulted in a 34-31 loss in 2007.
Louisville was added to the 2011 schedule after Tennessee opted out of a two-game series with the Tar Heels. Carolina has not faced Louisville since 2005.
