CHAPEL HILL -- After a 4-1 start to the 2011 season, North Carolina softball is ranked No. 22 in the latest USA Today/NFCA Coaches' Poll released Tuesday. Carolina jumped three spots after being ranked No. 25 in the first edition of the coaches' poll. The Tar Heels will challenge No. 5 Florida in Gainesville, Fla., this Saturday and Sunday.
UNC claimed victories over Jacksonville, Buffalo and Bethune Cookman (twice) this weekend after dropping a close contest to Kansas in the opener of the JU Tournament. Freshman pitcher Lori Spingola registered a 4-1 record, allowing just six runs and striking out 28 over 21.2 innings of work. At the plate, No. 22 UNC was paced by the junior duo of Kelli Wheeler and Ally Blake, who combined for 13 hits, two home runs and eight RBI.
North Carolina returns to action Saturday traveling to No. 5 Florida for a three-game set beginning at 1 p.m. from Katie Seashole Pressy Softball Stadium. For more Carolina softball updates, check back in at TarHeelBlue.com.
