STARKVILLE, MISS. -- After tossing her first career perfect game, freshman Lori Spingola has been named NFCA National Player of the Week. The Atlanta, Ga., native enjoyed a career week in the circle posting a 4-0 week and three complete-game shutouts en route to leading the Tar Heels to a 5-1 record.
The freshman struck out a rookie season-best 14 batters in a 7-0 win over UNC Wilmington Wednesday of last week. Spingola followed that performance with three shutout innings in a 14-0 win over Georgetown Friday.
Spingola hurled her second complete-game shutout Saturday in a 6-0 win over FIU. The freshman scattered just six hits over seven innings and struck out seven to earn her seventh win of 2011.
The Atlanta, Ga., product capped her career week with a perfect game in a 3-0 win over Penn State Sunday. Spingola worked ahead in the count and fanned six Nittany Lion batters in the record setting performance. It was the first perfect game by a Tar Heel since three-time All-America Danielle Spaulding was perfect in the ACC Tournament in May of 2008. Spingola finished the week with a 4-0 record, 0.52 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched last week.
Carolina returns to action Wednesday hosting Charlotte for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. from Anderson Stadium
