The University of North Carolina gymnastics team dropped its last meet of the season, placing fourth against tough competition from No. 30 Maryland, George Washington and No. 26 Kentucky. Carolina would finish the day with a 192.200.
"The first two events we didn't seem to be as strong as we needed to be in terms of team performance," said Head Coach Derek Galvin. "We had some good individual performances but the team was not where it needs to be.”
Junior Krista Jasper led the way on what was a shaky day for the Tar Heels on the beam. She finished with a team high score of 9.725. Morgan Evans would also start her day off well with a solid 9.650. The team finished the rotation with a 47.625 total score.
“We started on beam and it wasn't a strong start for us, it wasn't a good event today in terms of hitting routines,” said Galvin.
Carolina then went to floor, scoring a 48.250 total. Evans led the way with her dynamic routine, totaling a 9.8. In what is often her best event, Kristin Aloi remained strong at 9.725. Jasper was also steady, scoring a 9.625 in the rotation.
"Our top three on floor—Aloi, Jasper and Evans—did nice routines. Acacia also had a nice routine. Emily Cornwell went exhibition because she did a new tumbling pass and she did well making the pass," said Galvin.
The Tar Heels would record their highest team score of the day on vault at 48.275. Both Specialist Zoya Johnson and All-Around Evans stood out for Carolina on the event, hitting their vaults to each score a 9.825. Aloi also performed a solid vault, scoring a 9.675. Jasper scored a 9.65, adding to her all-around score.
“Morgan Evans and Krista Jasper both had very good meets as all-arounders," said Galvin. "We had some high points on vault, Kristin Aloi, Krista Jasper as well as Morgan and Zoya all performed some of the best vaults they've done this year.”
Carolina would finish its day on the bars. Krista Jasper was up first, hitting a solid routine for a 9.675. Teri Diamond's routine earned her a 9.2 and Elizabeth Durkac scored a 9.575. Evans and Johnson had strong performances to finish out the rotation. Both completed dynamic routines for a score of 9.8 and a tie for second.
Evans would finish her day with a 39.075, tying for second place all-around. Jasper would tally a 38.675.
"We talked about it as team and they realize that we have to be very focused getting ready for the EAGL championships," said Galvin. "We have to go into EAGLS with a strong competitive will."
On Saturday, March 19th, the Tar Heels will travel to Washington, D.C. to compete in the EAGL Championships. They will look to defend their 2010 EAGL title when the meet starts off at 2 p.m.
