RALEIGH, N.C.- The No. 22 North Carolina men's tennis team kicked off their ACC campaign with a 4-3 win over No. 48 N.C. State from Pullen Park.
The Tar Heels earned the doubles point for only the fourth time this season behind wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles. First, No. 22 Jose Hernandez and Brennan Boyajian took out N.C. State's Dominic Hodgson and Rob Lowe, 8-5. North Carolina clinched the point when 59th-ranked Stefan Hardy and Joey Burkhardt took out Julian Sullivan and Sean Weber by the same score at No. 2. After the point was decided, William Parker and Zach Hunter won at No. 3 doubles, 8-7.
Sporting the same lineup that beat Texas last week in Austin, the Tar Heels came out hot in singles. Five of the six singles competitors won their opening set, and Boyajian and Hardy wasted little time dispatching their opponents at No. 2 and 3 singles. 35th-ranked Hernandez, for the second match running, clinched the match with a singles win, 6-1, 6-4.
North Carolina is back in action Sunday, March 20 at 1 p.m. against Wake Forest in Winston-Salem.
