Washington, D.C. - Veteran University of North Carolina gymnastics coach Penny Jernigan was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Assistant Coach of the Year at Friday's awards banquet. Jernigan, now in her 17th season with the Tar Heels, and first as the team's associate coach, earned the award for the first time in her career. She has also twice been named the NCAA Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year (2002, 2004).
As a balance beam and floor exercise expert, she has developed several talented Tar Heel gymnasts, including All-America Christine Robella, two-time national champion Courtney Bumpers and three-time EAGL Gymnast of the Year Christine Nguyen. In addition to her work this season with All-EAGL performers Morgan Evans, Krista Jasper and Kristin Aloi, Jernigan was instrumental in developing the team's social media presence on facebook and twitter. Attendance more than doubled from last year in part due to Jernigan's efforts to market the program.
Jernigan is a 1992 graduate of Campbell University, where she attended on an academic scholarship.
