Marshall, Barnes, Breland Share Tar Heel Of The Week Honors

Due to their brilliant performances in leading North Carolina to the ACC regular-season title in men's basketball and to the ACC Tournament final in women's basketball, Harrison Barnes, Kendall Marshall and Jessica Breland have been named the tri-winners of the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for February 28-March 5, 2011.
Following is a complete summary of this week's nominees.

Women's Basketball

Jessica Breland led the Carolina women's basketball team to an amazing four-game run to the ACC Tournament final and earned first-team All-Tournament team honors after wins over Clemson, No. 14 Florida State and No. 10 Miami. The Kelford, N.C., senior averaged almost 20 points per game over the four-day event and established a new ACC Tournament record for made field goals with 32, breaking a record set 30 years ago by Clemson legend Barbara Kennedy. She scored a season-best 28 points in the semifinal rout of No. 10 Miami and added 27 in the title game loss to No. 8 Duke.
MEN'S BASKETBALL

Scored 18 points in both of Carolina's win this week over the second- and third-place teams in the standings (Duke and Florida State) helping Carolina win the regular-season title outright. Hit the game-winning three-pointer with 3.1 seconds to play in UNC's 72-70 win at Florida State. Scored nine points in each half against the Blue Devils and helped limit Duke's Kyle Singler to 3 of 14 shooting on the other end of the floor. Went 13 for 27 from the floor with four three-pointers in the two wins.
MEN'S BASKETBALL

Dumfries, Va.
Was sensational in Carolina's 81-67 victory over Duke to win the ACC regular season title as he scored 15 points, handed out 11 assists and committed just two turnovers in 36 minutes. Helped UNC score 81 points(most against Duke in an ACC game this year), including 51 in the first half (most in any half against Duke this year), and the Tar Heels shot 52.4 percent from the floor (no ACC team had previously shot better than 45.9 percent against the Blue Devils this season). Marshall had two more assists than the Blue Devils.
KELLI WHEELER

Kelli Wheeler lead UNC to a 4-3 week posting a .435 batting average with ten hits in 23 at-bats. Wheeler collected five RBI and 20 total bases on the week. The Marietta, Ga., native uncorked three home runs including a three-run walk off home run to give Carolina a 6-5 win over Long Island Saturday. Wheeler registered three multi-hit games on the week and leads UNC with a .406 batting average in 2011.

Redshirt freshman Zac Bennett became the 13th wrestler under head coach C.D. Mock to claim an ACC Championship Saturday in Charlottesville, Va.as the 197-pounder posted a 9-4 decision over Virginia Tech's Chris Penny. Bennett opened the 2011 ACC Championships as the No. 2 seed at 197 pounds and claimed a 10-4 decision over Maryland's Christian Boley to advance to the championship bout. Instead of facing the number one seed, Bennett squared off against Chris Penny of Virginia Tech who upset No. 1 seed Mike Salopek of Virginia in the semifinal round. With the win Bennett punched his ticket for the NCAA Championships claiming the lone automatic bid from the 197 class in the ACC.
KENT EMANUEL

Kent Emanuel was impressive in the first home start of his career Tuesday as the left-hander threw eight innings of one-run ball, while striking out nine in No. 17 North Carolina's 4-2 win over Charlotte. Emanuel faced one over the minimum through the first eight innings before getting in trouble in the ninth as he carried a shutout into the final frame. The left-hander retired the side in order in six of eight innings. Emanuel allowed just two hits through his first eight innings and finished allowingfour hits on 91 pitches. Emanuel gave up two runs, only one earned in the ninth inning to close out his day. Emanuel nearly became the first freshman pitcher since 2005 to pitch a complete game shutout.
MICHAEL MCGOWAN

Michael McGowan finished in third place at the Seahawk Intercollegiate, thefirst event of the spring campaign for the men's golf team. McGowan fired a 2-over-par 218 total in the three-day tournament played at the Country Club of Landfall, Nicklaus Course, in Wilmington, N.C. He carded an even-par 72 in both the first and final rounds and shot a 74 in the second round.
MORGAN EVANS
Gymnastics
Junior, All-Around
Norfolk, Va.
Evans posted a 39.125 in the all-around in Carolina's final home meet of the season, leading the Tar Heels to a 194.400 score and a win over William & Mary. Evans captured individual crowns on the balance beam with a 9.775 and on floor with a 9.850. She also had a 9.800 on vault and a 9.700 on bars.
COREY DONOHOE
Women's Lacrosse

Senior Corey Donohoe led the Tar Heels with three goals and one assist for four points in Saturday's 10-7 loss at No. 8 Penn on Saturday. Donohoe connected on both of her free position opportunities and collected a ground ball as the third-ranked Tar Heels fell to 3-2 this season. UNC returns to action on Monday night at Denver.
CHRIS MADALON
Men's Lacrosse
Senior Goalkeeper

Senior goalkeeper Chris Madalon equaled his career high of 14 saves as the Tar Heels staved off persistent UMBC 13-9 at Fetzer Field. Madalon has seven saves in each half and wasparticularly effective in the first half as he limited the Retrievers to two goals as Carolina sped to a 6-2 lead at intermission, an advantage they kept at three goals or more the rest of the day. Madalon also had four ground balls. His 14 saves matched his career high of 14 he had against Virginia at the Meadowlands in 2010.
