DENVER, COLO. - The University of North Carolina got hat tricks from three different players and defeated Denver, 13-3, on a cold Monday evening. With the victory, Carolina improves to 4-2 this season. Denver falls to 1-5.
Corey Donohoe, Laura Zimmerman and Sarah Kuonen each scored three goals for the Tar Heels, with Donohoe and Zimmerman adding an assist for four points apiece. Becky Lynch had two goals and an assist and Emily Garrity and Kaitlyn Messinger scored single goals.
Zimmerman and Taylor Chumney forced three turnovers each for the Tar Heels, and Lauren Maksym made eight saves in the win.
The Pioneers had scoring opportunities in the opening session, but fell behind 1-0 early. Carolina scored twice before Secora got the Pioneers on the board with a free position goal at the 9:07 mark. Denver outshot UNC 11-8 in the first half, but North Carolina scored three of its five first half goals from free position shots, and the Pioneers trailed 5-1 at intermission.
Denver tallied two more goals in the second half, but the Tar Heel offense scored eight times in the final 30 minutes.
UNC outshot DU 24-17 in the game, but Denver won the ground ball battle 12-11. The Tar Heels were 4-of-11 on free-position shots and Denver was 2-of-4.
Carolina will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Virginia at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
